Geography

Located at the geographical center of the Ashen Plains, Ash-Hollow is built on a rare stable platform of ancient cooled basalt that has not shifted in recorded geological history, giving the city a permanence unusual for draconic settlements in such an active volcanic region. The city's architecture is low and horizontal, designed to complement rather than interrupt the vast flat horizon of the Plains, with structures carved directly into the basalt rather than built atop it.

Climate

Drier and cooler than the Drakon Range settlements, Ash-Hollow experiences the Ashen Plains' characteristic grey-sky seasons when volcanic ash from distant eruptions drifts overhead, softening sunlight to a diffuse silver glow that Ash Wyrm artists prize for outdoor sculpture work. Nights are cold, and the silence is absolute — sound carries strangely across the mineral flatlands, so the city's inhabitants keep voices low as a matter of cultural courtesy.

Points of Interest

  • 📍 The Secondary Crystal Archive (the Ash-Hollow branch overseen by Echo the Memory Keeper, holding the most complete pre-Dark Times records in the empire)
  • 📍 The Ash-Sculpture Gardens (a two-mile circuit of monumental ash-sculptures encoding genealogies and historical events, maintained by the city's Wyrm artists)
  • 📍 Nyssara's Atelier (the workshop of Nyssara the Ash Weaver, whose ash-tapestries encode entire genealogies in their mineral grain patterns)
  • 📍 The Hall of Long Silence (a meditation hall where Ash Wyrm philosophers convene for extended periods of collective philosophical reflection)
  • 📍 The Ashen Plain Refuges (fire-adapted flora seed-banks maintained at the city's southern boundary)

History

Ash-Hollow predates Ember-Throne by thousands of years, having served as a philosophical retreat for Ash Wyrms since the earliest centuries of the empire. Its secondary Crystal Archive branch was established after the Dark Times as a deliberate redundancy measure: the Elder Dragon Council recognized that having a single Archive in the Citadel created an unacceptable vulnerability, and Ash-Hollow's geological stability and distance from the Drakon Range's volcanic activity made it the obvious secondary site. Echo the Memory Keeper has administered this branch for three centuries, and her branch is known to hold Archive strata unavailable at the Citadel — records that some council members have periodically sought to have sealed.

Legend & Lore

The city's name derives from the Ash Wyrm legend of the First Hollow: in the age before the Ashen Plains existed as plains, the world was covered in unbroken volcanic forest. A single Primordial Ash Wyrm, the oldest of her kind, breathed out all her fire in one continuous exhalation lasting seven days, clearing a perfect circle of forest and letting the ash settle into the flat mineral soil that became the Plains. The hollow she stood in at the center became the city. Scholars note that this origin legend neatly describes a geological event consistent with the Plains' actual formation, which the Crystal Archive records but cannot fully explain through natural volcanic processes alone.

Life & Culture

Life in Ash-Hollow moves at geological pace. Ash Wyrms here measure their days in contemplative cycles rather than forge-shifts, spending long morning hours in philosophical discussion before turning to sculpture work in the diffuse afternoon light. Drakonian mortal residents are drawn primarily from archival professions — scribes, crystal-readers, genealogists — and share the Ash Wyrm commitment to silence and unhurriedness. Visiting scholars from other civilizations, particularly Celestial Order academics and occasional Fey Court envoys, are welcomed here more readily than at the Citadel, as the city's contemplative culture extends a natural hospitality to those who arrive in a spirit of study rather than negotiation.
