The Preserves are not contiguous but scattered across seven designated zones in the mid-elevation Drakon Range, wherever subsurface geological surveys have identified significant rune-crystal vein deposits. Each zone is delineated by carved boundary markers etched with the Three-Scaled Crest and the Ministry of Arcane Ecology's provincial seal. The crystal formations within range from finger-thin mineral threads in cave walls to pillar-like growths twenty feet tall whose facets pulse faintly with absorbed thermal energy.

The cave systems that house the most significant crystal formations maintain naturally stable temperatures regulated by deep-rock thermal mass, varying less than a few degrees across entire seasons. This geological stability is precisely why rune-crystal grows here: the formations require consistent heat to develop the thermal-encoding properties that make them usable as Archive substrates.

The Crystal Vein Preserves were formally designated in the post-Dark Times reconstruction period, when the Elder Dragon Council conducted a comprehensive survey of Aurixian geological assets and recognized that unregulated Runic Smith harvesting of natural crystal veins was depleting the formations faster than they could regrow. The Basalt Triad's injunction that Memory is Duty was interpreted to include the protection of the substrate memory is stored in, and the Preserves were established under unanimous council decree. Three attempts by Shard-Guild factions to reclassify portions of the Preserves as harvestable resources have been rejected by the council — most recently a century ago when Spark the Inventor proposed a controlled harvesting scheme that was declined on geological-risk grounds.

The elder Ash Wyrms of Ash-Hollow maintain that the rune-crystal formations of the Preserves are not passive geological phenomena but slow-growing consciousness: that each crystal vein is a thought being thought by the mountain over geological timescales, and that the Archive's heat-imprinting process is not encoding memory onto crystal but entering into dialogue with a mind that already knows more than any dragon. This view is dismissed by most Runic Engineers as romantic projection, but Ministry of Arcane Ecology archivists note that the crystal formations in the Preserves do respond to dragonfire differently from harvested specimens — their growth accelerating measurably in decades following intensive Archive encoding work at the Citadel.

The Preserves are managed rather than inhabited in the conventional sense. Ministry field teams rotate through the survey stations on six-week cycles, monitoring crystal growth rates, assessing Crystal-Wyvern colony health, and conducting the thermal-imaging surveys that allow archivists to identify when a formation has reached encoding-ready maturity.
