Geography
The Temperate Forests occupy a broad elevational band between the open farmland of the Verdant Plains and the treeline of the Silver-spine Highlands. The forest is not uniform: the northern reaches near Windmere Province are dominated by ironbark oaks and silver-birch, their canopy closing densely overhead; the central belt transitions into mixed stands of luminous fern, whispering grass meadow, and ancient yew; and the southern margin, closest to the Verdant Plains, thins into open parkland grazed by Crystal Boars and patrolled by Eco-Rangers.
Climate
Temperate and seasonal, with long growing seasons and moderate rainfall distributed across the year. Summers beneath the canopy are cooler than the open plains; winters bring heavy snowfall at higher elevations, though the valley forests rarely freeze entirely. The equinoxes produce notable surges in ambient mana flow that cause the luminous fern to bloom brilliant blue-green for several days, drawing scholars and artists from across the empire.

History
The Temperate Forests were heavily logged during the early centuries of the empire, when shipbuilding and construction demanded vast quantities of ironbark timber. By Year 600, ecologists attached to the fledgling Guild of Agriculture noted alarming signs of ley-line depletion in cleared zones, where the mana-absorbing root networks of old ironbark stands had been removed. The ecological crisis that followed contributed to the creation of the Order of the Green Covenant and the passage of the Green Covenant law, which now protects fifteen percent of the empire's landmass as untouched wilderness. The forests have largely recovered under managed regrowth programs.
Legend & Lore
Foresters in the northern reaches speak of the Walking Grove, a section of ancient ironbark woodland that is said to shift its position by as much as a league between seasons, responding to ley-line pulses that move like underground tides. Rangers assigned to map the northern forest report persistent discrepancies between their survey charts and the actual positions of old-growth stands. The Arcane Academy of Gleamspire has dispatched three expeditions to investigate; all three returned with conflicting data and the uneasy sense that the forest was aware of being studied.
Life & Culture
The forests support a dispersed population of herbalists, woodcutters, Eco-Rangers, and the occasional reclusive alchemist who prefers the quiet of the canopy to the noise of El'goroth. Rural communities at the forest edge operate sustainably, following mana-rotation schedules coordinated with the Alchemical Agronomists Guild to prevent ley-line stress. The forests are a beloved destination for urban Azarians seeking respite from the city, and the Greenway trail system built in Year 803 now connects a dozen forest cantons along a marked pathway maintained by volunteer guilds.
