History
The Gathering Grounds predate recorded history among the Nomads, their existence passed down through oral tradition as the birthplace of the Tribal Confederation itself. It was here that the founding agreement of shared autonomy and collective counsel was first reached, and here that figures such as current symbolic leader Vaelen Swiftmane of the Tribe of the Silver Mane have risen to prominence. Tribes from across Landorya's frontier are known to send envoys to these gatherings, making the site a quiet nexus of inter-civilizational diplomacy.
Legend & Lore
It is said that when the first chieftains of the scattered plains tribes met at this very expanse to forge the founding pact, the aurora itself descended low enough to touch the earth, weaving curtains of green and silver light between the gathered elders as a divine blessing upon their accord. Nomad oral tradition holds that a great white mare, unowned, unsaddled, and never seen before or since, walked the perimeter of the assembly three times before vanishing into the horizon, an omen interpreted as the plains themselves sanctifying the confederation. In darker retellings, whispered by outriders around dying fires, one chieftain refused to swear the pact and was swallowed by the earth where the central speaking-stone now rests; some say on moonless nights a hand still reaches up through the soil, still seeking a voice in council. Envoys from foreign civilizations have reported waking at the Grounds to find hoof-prints encircling their tents, belonging to no horse in any caravan, and interpreting this as a warning that the land remembers who belongs here and who does not.
Life & Culture
When a Gathering is called, announced by riders bearing braided signal-cords of tribe-specific colors dispatched weeks in advance, the Grounds transform within days from bare, wind-swept plain into a vast living city of felt pavilions, tethered herds, and cook-smoke rising in tribal columns. Each tribe stakes its camp in a traditional sector radiating outward from the central speaking-stone, and the first act of every Gathering is the Threadwalk, in which an elder from each tribe winds a cord of their clan's color around the stone, binding all present into collective obligation. Days are given over to open council, trade arbitration, and the public hearing of grievances, while evenings fill with competitive riding displays, storytelling contests, and the ceremonial sharing of fermented mare's milk passed in carved horn cups from hand to hand across tribal lines. When the Gathering closes, each tribe unwinds its cord and carries it home, the frayed ends a physical reminder that the confederation's strength is woven, not forged, and can always be unwound.
