Magic Profile

Nature
Chronomancy is the manipulation of time's flow, slowing, accelerating, reading, or momentarily suspending it, practiced through meditative focus, sand-based instruments, and scripted temporal formulae. It feels like standing in a river that bends around the practitioner, the world moving at a different rhythm just beyond arm's reach.

Key Aspects

0

Temporal dilation and compression of localized time-fields

1

Chrono-Sands reading: interpreting past events through enchanted sand instruments

2

Prophetic inscription at the Chrono-Observatory

3

Temporal anchoring to freeze an object or space at a fixed moment

4

Paradox threading: holding two conflicting timestreams simultaneously in mind

Practitioners

0

Chrono-Scribes who document history and prophecy at the Chrono-Observatory

1

Elder Riddle-Mages who incorporate temporal paradox into their riddling trials

2

Sphinx archivists preserving decaying texts by anchoring them in suspended time

3

Solitary seers who trade prophecy to Human and Elven emissaries via air-caravan

Limitations

Chronomancy cannot reverse time, only observe the past through resonant impressions or alter the pace of its passage briefly in a localized area. Prolonged use accelerates the aging of the practitioner's own body, and the Chrono-Scribes keep meticulous records of each Sphinx's accumulated temporal debt.

Common Applications

  • Sands of the Frozen Hour, a ritual using Chrono-Sands to lock a chamber in a single preserved moment
  • The Long Echo, a spell that replays a past event as a visible, silent impression in the air
  • Dilation Field, a localized aura that slows all motion within it to a crawl for a short duration
  • Debt of Ages, a curse that dramatically accelerates aging in a target, drawing on their own temporal reserve
  • The Paradox Interval, a meditative state in which the caster experiences two possible futures simultaneously before choosing one to act upon

Cultural Significance

Chronomancy is the most prestigious and feared discipline among the Sphinxes, practiced at the sacred Chrono-Observatory and governed by strict Chrono-Scribe oversight. Foreign civilizations, particularly Human Lowland rulers, seek Sphinx prophecy eagerly, making Chronomancy a quiet but powerful diplomatic currency across Landorya.

Lore

The Chrono-Observatory was not built, it was uncovered. Sphinx excavators clearing rubble from the Sun-Scarred Peaks found its foundations already carved into the mountain by hands no living scholar can identify, filled with Chrono-Sands that had never been placed there by Sphinx hands. The Riddle-Masters declared it a gift from the Celestials and a warning: time was already being watched before the Sphinxes learned to watch it. The greatest Chrono-Scribe in recorded Sphinx history, known only as the Twice-Born, allegedly achieved the Paradox Interval for seventeen consecutive days and returned with a prophecy so complete and terrible it was sealed in the deepest vault of the Obsidian Library under a Paradox Mark. No Chronomancer since has attempted to unseal it, for the Mark asks a riddle that no one has yet survived answering.
