Appearance

Physical: Small and still filling out — his lion body has the coltish gait of a Sphinx who has not yet grown into his own limbs, and his midnight feathers carry the blue-black iridescence of youth that elder Sphinxes lose after a few centuries. His eyes are a bright, unchanging gold, which is unusual: most Sphinx eyes begin shifting colour with time of day only after the first hundred years, and his have not started. Chronomancer Vyr finds this fascinating and slightly ominous.

Clothing: The plain grey apprentice's wrap of the Chrono-Observatory, perpetually covered in fine chalk dust from the astronomical charts he is always revising. He carries three Chrono-Sand vials at all times — two are empty samples for study, one is sealed and is not to be opened under any circumstances, according to a note from Vyr that Pyraxis has not been allowed to read.

Distinguishing Marks: His third eye opened six months earlier than any recorded Sphinx, at the age of two years after hatching. The Wyrm-Egg he emerged from is still kept in the Observatory's relic room — it shows faint temporal scarring on the shell that no one has explained.

Relationships

  • Chronomancer Vyr - His mentor, who alternates between genuine warmth and opaque withholding in a pattern Pyraxis has not yet decoded. He is devoted to Vyr and increasingly suspicious that the devotion is being used to keep him from asking certain questions.
  • Saerith the Unbound - The exiled Riddle-Mage on the outer ridges who taught him three things the Observatory does not know. He is keeping the appointment for the next three lessons and has told no one.
  • Nyxara Dawnwing - The Riddle-Ambassador who occasionally returns from Sylvanos with gifts of Elven star-charts. She is kind to him in a way that feels more like pity than warmth, which he finds confusing.

Personality

  • Traits: Burning with questions, socially earnest to the point of obliviousness, genuinely kind, and constitutionally unable to let a puzzle sit unsolved for more than an hour
  • Mannerisms: Writes on any available surface including his own fur when parchment is unavailable; asks follow-up questions before the first question has been answered; unconsciously mirrors the stance of whoever he is speaking to, which Sphinxes read as a sign of deep respect and outsiders find unnerving
  • Voice: High for a Sphinx, clear and quick, with an endearing tendency to pitch upward at the end of declarative statements as though everything he says is slightly uncertain.

Backstory

Pyraxis hatched in the midst of a Star-storm that struck the Sun-Scarred Peaks with unusual violence, and the Chrono-Observatory's Celestial Orreries all advanced forward by exactly three seconds at the moment of his birth — an event that has not been replicated or explained. His parents, an Essence Pair of Astro-Glyphists, presented him to the Observatory at age ten for assessment, expecting a routine evaluation. Vyr spent four hours with the hatchling and emerged to tell the parents their son was not an Astro-Glyphist. He took Pyraxis as his sole apprentice the following morning. In the hundred and forty years since, Pyraxis has mastered the theoretical framework of Chronomancy faster than anyone before him, but Vyr has deliberately slowed his practical training — a decision Pyraxis finds maddening and does not understand. The visit to the outcast Saerith on the outer ridges, made against all instruction, was his first act of genuine defiance.

Daily Life

Pyraxis rises at the Dawn Echo for the Sun-Kiss ritual, then immediately returns to the Observatory's chart room to record overnight temporal fluctuations. Vyr rarely arrives before midday, leaving Pyraxis to work autonomously on problems he has been set — and on problems he has set himself, which are usually more interesting. He eats hurriedly at the communal table, barely noticing what the Stone-Stew contains, and spends evenings at the Riddle-Circles more as an observer than a participant, writing down every unsolved puzzle.

Secret

During a solo calibration session in the Observatory's lower vault, Pyraxis accidentally activated a dormant Chrono-Sand sample and glimpsed two seconds of a future he cannot now forget: the Obsidian Library in flames, Aeloria lying motionless on the steps, and something enormous casting a shadow from above that was neither wing nor stone. He has not told Vyr. He has not told anyone. He is terrified the vision was of next year.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Pyraxis approaches outsiders near the Observatory in a state of barely contained urgency: he needs someone to verify a temporal anomaly he detected in the lowlands without going through official Sphinx channels — if he is right, Vyr will have to answer questions about the Chrono-Sands supply he has been avoiding, and Pyraxis is not ready to be the one who causes that.
  • 2 A rival young Sphinx, jealous of Pyraxis's position as Vyr's apprentice, challenges him to a Riddle Duel. Pyraxis knows he will win the riddle — but he has found evidence the rival's Essence Pair has been leaking Observatory secrets to the Dragonbinders, and he needs help deciding whether to use it.

Narrative Value

Pyraxis is the viewpoint character for players new to Sphinx society — young, accessible, and genuinely curious. His secret vision drives an urgent subplot, and his dual mentorships with Vyr and the exiled Saerith put him at the centre of the civilisation's tension between law and truth.
