A vast chain of high-altitude peaks riddled with sky-bridges, crystal caverns, and elevated plateaus that serve as the primary habitation zones of the Sphinxes. The terrain is sharp and vertical, with sheer cliff faces colonized by Stone-Vines and deep cavern systems carved by generations of Sphinx architects. Sky-bridges of sun-baked stone and obsidian connect plateau settlements across vertiginous chasms.

The air is perpetually thin and cold, and the sky exists in a state of near-constant dusk, never fully surrendering to day or night. Star-storms sweep through the peaks at irregular intervals, discharging magical energy into crystalline conduits embedded throughout the range.

The Sun-Scarred Peaks have been home to the Sphinxes since before recorded history, shaped by millennia of celestial magic and riddling tradition into both a fortress and a sanctuary. Borgang the War of the Shattered Crown, the peaks served as a base from which Sphinx Oracles dispatched prophecies to the Human Empire of Azaria, guidance that ultimately went unrewarded, as Azaria's betrayal caused the Sphinxes to withdraw into the range and sever most outside contact. The peaks remain the source of the Celestial Crystals and Echo-Stone traded to the wider world of Landorya.

It is whispered among the lower peoples of Landorya that the highest summit of the Sun-Scarred Peaks, called the Throne of the First Question, was once the site of a bargain struck between the primordial Sphinxes and the sun itself: the Sphinxes would guard the celestial fire locked within the mountain's crystal heart, and in return the sun would never fully set upon their range, leaving the peaks in their eternal, luminous twilight. When Azaria betrayed the Sphinx Oracles at the close of the War of the Shattered Crown, it is said the sun dimmed for seven days in mourning, and the auroras that split the sky turned the colour of old blood. Those who have dared approach the sealed Oracle Halls, vast riddling chambers carved into the uppermost cliffs, report hearing questions echoing from within that no living throat has spoken in centuries, as though the mountains themselves still await answers that were never given.

Daily existence in the Sun-Scarred Peaks is structured around the riddling liturgies that mark the passage of celestial events, at each aurora, Sphinxes gather upon elevated plateaus to pose and answer ritual questions whose solutions are believed to keep the range's celestial magic in harmony. Craftwork is deeply entwined with this tradition: Sphinx architects carve new glyphs of inquiry into cliff faces as acts of devotion, while crystal-shapers harvest Celestial Crystals from deep cavern systems by solving the resonant tonal puzzles that the formations present before yielding. Sky-bridge crossings are never made in silence; to step onto the sun-baked obsidian spans without speaking a riddle aloud is considered a grave omen, an invitation for the chasm below to answer instead.
