Appearance

Physical: Smaller than average, with scales rather than fur covering his lion body — an extremely rare genetic throwback the Codex of Paradoxes classifies as an 'ancestral echo.' His scales are iridescent blue-green, shifting toward gold in direct sunlight. His wings are midnight blue with white-tipped primaries.

Clothing: Carries a satchel of Dragonbinder diplomatic tokens alongside the standard Riddle-Ambassador insignia — a Glyphic Spiral amulet he keeps conspicuously visible.

Distinguishing Marks: His third eye is half the standard size and blinks independently from his regular eyes.

Relationships

  • Sorveth Irontalon - He considers her well-intentioned but trapped in a soldier's frame; she considers him naive. They have had the same argument forty times and both show up for the forty-first.
  • High Riddle-Keeper Aeloria - She watches him with quiet approval — he reminds her of the hunger she felt in her own youth, which both pleases and concerns her.
  • Gorvak - A Dragonbinder clan-elder and his closest ally in the territories, whose friendship would be diplomatically inconvenient if widely known.

Personality

  • Traits: Disarmingly open for a Sphinx, possessing genuine curiosity about Dragonbinders rather than the diplomatic tolerance that is expected, slightly too eager to see the best in others
  • Mannerisms: Uses Dragonbinder hand-signals unconsciously when speaking, which unsettles other Sphinxes; collects small dragon-scale fragments as diplomatic souvenirs; asks follow-up questions when protocol dictates he should deliver a riddle and leave
  • Voice: Warm and adaptable — he unconsciously shifts his cadence to match whoever he is speaking with, which disarms diplomats and makes Sphinxes uneasy.

Backstory

Drarux was selected for the Dragonbinder posting because he solved a riddle about scales versus feathers that the Council interpreted as metaphorically apt. He interpreted it literally and requested the assignment directly — unprecedented. In two centuries at the Dragon Roost Outpost he learned three Dragonbinder dialects, shared Echo-Stone technology in exchange for a border truce, and formed friendships the Council officially classifies as diplomatic rapport. He has been recalled twice for exceeding his brief and returned both times with concessions the Council could not afford to reject.

Daily Life

When home in the Sun-Scarred Peaks, Drarux spends time in the Obsidian Library compiling a comparative lexicon of Dragonbinder and Sphinxian riddle-forms — a project not formally sanctioned. He exchanges correspondence with Dragonbinder contacts via trained Echo-Bats, also technically unsanctioned. At Riddle-Circles he poses riddles drawn from Dragonbinder oral tradition that generally baffle other Sphinxes, which he finds quietly satisfying.

Secret

A Dragonbinder faction has formally asked Drarux to sponsor them as co-signatories to the Treaty of the Whispering Winds. He has not reported this to the Council because he knows they will refuse, and he is quietly building enough goodwill to change their minds before the opportunity expires.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Drarux hires outsiders to escort him urgently to the Dragon Roost Outpost. His contact Gorvak has been displaced by a more aggressive Dragonbinder faction, and he must reach him before that faction consolidates.
  • 2 A Dragonbinder envoy appears at the Sun-Scarred Peaks without appointment, seeking Drarux specifically. Sorveth has barred entry. Drarux needs outsiders to serve as neutral intermediaries in a negotiation the Council cannot be allowed to supervise.

Narrative Value

Drarux bridges Sphinxes and Dragonbinders and offers geopolitical quest threads. His warmth contrasts with typical Sphinx remoteness, making him an accessible entry point for outsider characters who find the civilization otherwise opaque.
