Appearance

Physical: Bronze-furred lion body criss-crossed with ritual scars from the Riddle Covenant's bonding ceremony that activates each Stone-Sentinel under her command. Her wings are the colour of iron ore, flecked with rust-red at the primaries. Her human face is severe, with a jaw set in permanent assessment. Eyes cycle slowly through copper and deep brown.

Clothing: No adornment except the Command-Seal — a flat disc of obsidian engraved with the activation rune of every Stone-Sentinel she controls, worn on a cord of braided star-vine.

Distinguishing Marks: Her third eye stays shut unless she is directing Stone-Sentinels, at which point it opens to shine a vivid copper light that others find unsettling.

Relationships

  • Khandor Skywarden - Her second-in-command, trusted without reservation; she suspects she has been grooming him for her own role without consciously intending to.
  • High Riddle-Keeper Aeloria - Mutual respect between two beings who hold power in different registers. Aeloria never interferes with Sorveth's military decisions.
  • Drarux Wingscale - The Riddle-Ambassador to the Dragonbinders, whom she regards as dangerously naive about their capacity for organized violence.

Personality

  • Traits: Tactical and economical with words, contemptuous of theoretical riddles that have no practical application, loyal to the civilization above all personal considerations, quietly proud of soldiers she has trained
  • Mannerisms: Stands with both front claws planted symmetrically, never at ease; inspects visitors from feet to head before acknowledging them; issues commands in incomplete sentences, trusting subordinates to know the rest
  • Voice: Flat, measured baritone that rarely rises. When giving orders, her voice drops lower rather than louder — a technique to prevent echo-interference with Stone-Sentinel command signals.

Backstory

Sorveth rose through the Winged Guardians during the Dragonbinder border skirmishes, distinguishing herself by devising the Illusory Maze formation used to defend the eastern roosts. When Aeloria offered her command of the Stone-Sentinels seventy years ago, she accepted despite the post's traditionally ceremonial nature and immediately restructured it into an active deterrent force. She personally recarved the activation runes on forty-three dormant sentinels that had stood inactive since the War of the Shattered Crown. The Council finds her disquieting because she treats riddles as tactical tools rather than cosmic truths.

Daily Life

Sorveth patrols the sky-bridges at dawn before other Sphinxes wake, checking every active Stone-Sentinel along the outer perimeter. Mornings are devoted to training Winged Guardian recruits in Sonic Shockwave coordination. After midday she reviews intelligence reports from border observation posts — she maintains a network of scouts that technically exceeds her sanctioned military budget. Evenings she attends Riddle-Circles only when Council attendance is compulsory.

Secret

Six of the Stone-Sentinels Sorveth reactivated are bound to her personal command word, not the Council's. She tells herself this is a contingency against possible Council corruption. She has never used them and chooses not to examine too closely why she made them.

Story Hooks

  • 1 A Stone-Sentinel has gone rogue, wandering south toward the Human Lowlands and carving symbols no Sphinx can read. Sorveth needs outsiders to track and neutralize it before it crosses into populated territory — quietly, without a Council report.
  • 2 Sorveth privately contacts the party to investigate whether a Council member has been meeting secretly with Dragonbinder emissaries. She cannot use official intelligence assets without tipping off the very person she suspects.

Narrative Value

Sorveth is the military anchor of the civilization, providing action-oriented quests in contrast to the mystical council figures. Her personally bound sentinels create a ticking-clock subplot, and her tension with Drarux seeds the Dragonbinder geopolitical thread.
