Appearance
Physical: Enormous even by Sphinx standards, her lion body is the deep amber of sun-baked sandstone, scarred with centuries of ritual carvings etched by her own claw. Her midnight feathered wings span nearly thirty feet and carry faint luminescence at their tips — a side effect of absorbing the Essence of Paradox during the Solving of the Endless Night. Her human face is ageless but deeply lined, and her luminous eyes cycle slowly through gold, violet, and silver over the course of a single day.
Clothing: Wears no adornment save the Triple-Sigil Collar — three interlocking Star-Coins forged from meteoric iron, each engraved with the Spiral of Insight, the Twin-Eye Emblem, and a third symbol no living Sphinx can decipher.
Distinguishing Marks: Her third eye on the forehead glows continuously at a soft amber — it never dims, even at night, and other Sphinxes find it unsettling to hold her gaze for long.
Relationships
- Chronomancer Vyr - Oldest colleague and the only peer she speaks to without ceremony. Their disagreements about whether time or knowledge is the superior cosmic principle have been ongoing for eighteen hundred years and have never been resolved.
- Nyxara Dawnwing - The young Riddle-Ambassador Aeloria personally selected for the Sylvanos posting — she sees in Nyxara the same hunger that drove her own youth, and it both pleases and frightens her.
- Saerith the Unbound - Rendered the exile judgment herself. Does not regret it, but she reads every report of Saerith's wanderings that reaches the Library — something she has never admitted to the Council.

Backstory
Four millennia ago Aeloria was a mid-ranking Riddle-Mage when the Eternal Drought gripped the Sun-Scarred Peaks, withering Stone-Vines and driving the Echo Bats to extinction in the eastern caverns. For three centuries the Council debated its meaning while Aeloria retired to the lowest vault of the Obsidian Library and read backward through the Codex of Paradoxes until she found the inverted riddle hidden at its foundation. The answer — spoken aloud at the peak of the Solar Convergence — shattered the drought in a single morning of rain. The Council seat representing the principle of Knowledge had been vacant; they offered it to her that evening. She has occupied the High Riddle-Keeper's seat for the past eight hundred years, outlasting four challengers, and has steered the Sphinxes through the War of the Shattered Crown, the withdrawal from the Human Empire of Azaria, and the forging of the Treaty of the Whispering Winds with Sylvanos.
Daily Life
Aeloria rises before the Dawn Echo to review petitions submitted to the Council — parchment scrolls of riddled grievances that accumulate overnight in a stone tray outside her chamber. She hears three Riddle Duels a week, serves as arbitrator, and spends her afternoons in the deep archive researching what she privately calls the Unasked Question: a riddle she suspects underlies all creation. Evenings she walks the sky-bridges alone, watching the auroras above the peaks.
Secret
The Riddle of the Endless Night was not fully solved. Aeloria answered one of its two halves and fabricated the resolution of the second, which she has since spent four thousand years trying to actually solve in secret. If the incomplete answer unravels, the drought — or something worse — returns.
Story Hooks
- 1 A petitioner arrives bearing proof that the Codex of Paradoxes contains a page that did not exist a century ago, describing events that have not yet happened — and it is signed with Aeloria's own Glyphic Spiral.
- 2 Aeloria summons outsiders to the Obsidian Library and presents them with a riddle that three successive Council members have failed — if they answer correctly, she claims she will tell them where the Essence of Paradox is hidden, and why she believes someone is trying to steal it.
Narrative Value
Aeloria is the civilizational anchor — the ultimate authority on Sphinx lore, law, and prophecy. She functions as quest-giver for highest-stakes missions, judge of player characters' worthiness, and keeper of secrets that predate living memory. Her hidden failure gives her a vulnerability that makes her sympathetic rather than omnipotent.
