"The Elves say a silver tongue is the diplomat's weapon. Sphinxes know better — the question you do not ask is the one that disarms."

Appearance

Physical: Slender and precisely groomed, her lion body is a warm honey-gold that photographs well in Elven court lighting — a fact she is aware of and has never mentioned. Her wings carry the signature midnight feathers of her race but with unusual white tipping on the outermost primaries, which she inherited from her maternal Essence-pair and considers her most recognisable feature. Her eyes shift colour more vividly than most Sphinxes, cycling in visible waves of blue and green that Elves find hypnotic and she uses as a conscious rhetorical tool.

Clothing: In Sylvanos, she wears diplomatically chosen attire that blends Sphinxian Glyphic-Spiral embroidery with Elven silver-thread work — a visual statement of the Treaty of the Whispering Winds she negotiates under. At home in the Obsidian Library, she reverts immediately to plain Sphinx travel-wraps, a distinction she maintains with evident relief.

Distinguishing Marks: A faint scar on the back of her right forepaw from her Riddling Trial — she pressed her claw into the stone examination table hard enough to score it while composing her final answer. She passed without anyone noticing.

Relationships

  • High Riddle-Keeper Aeloria - The one who sent her and the one she reports to directly. She genuinely admires Aeloria and is beginning to suspect that admiration is part of what Aeloria calculated when she selected her.
  • Pyraxis Starborn - The young apprentice who receives Elven star-charts from her with an enthusiasm that reminds her of her own early years. She treats him kindly and worries his talent will be wasted in the Observatory's internal politics.
  • Elven High Councillor Thalindra - Her counterpart in the Treaty relationship — a five-hundred-year-old Elven diplomat who respects Nyxara's competence and tests it constantly. Their working relationship is the warmest either has allowed themselves with a member of the other race.

Backstory

Nyxara was selected personally by High Riddle-Keeper Aeloria for the Sylvanos posting at age two hundred and eighty — young by Sphinx standards for such a role, but Aeloria had been observing her for decades. As a scholar in the Obsidian Library, Nyxara had produced a monograph arguing that the Sphinxes' withdrawal from contact after the Azarian betrayal during the War of the Shattered Crown had cost them more in accumulated ignorance than the betrayal itself had cost in lives. The Council debated whether to censure her for it. Aeloria sent her to Sylvanos instead. In thirty years she has renegotiated three sub-clauses of the Treaty of the Whispering Winds in Sphinx favour, established a private line of prophetic counsel to the Elven High Council, and learned four Elven dialects well enough to catch deliberate mistranslations. She is the most effective Riddle-Ambassador in three centuries, which means the other Sphinxes are never entirely sure whether she is working for them or working on them.

Daily Life

In Sylvanos, her days run to the Elven calendar — morning audiences, afternoon negotiations or information-gathering social events, evening dinners where she deploys carefully measured Prophetic Riddles as conversational currency. She corresponds with the Obsidian Library through a dedicated Echo-Stone Resonator chain that she maintains herself. When in residence at the Library during seasonal returns, she reads voraciously for three days, answers every message she has deferred, reports to Aeloria, and then reluctantly flies back.

Secret

Nyxara has been recruited by a faction within the Elven Council — not the official High Council — to provide private intelligence on Sphinx military capabilities. She has accepted the recruitment and is feeding them carefully curated misinformation, but she has not told Aeloria about the recruitment itself. She tells herself this is because she needs to run the counter-intelligence longer before reporting. She is not certain this is the whole truth.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Nyxara arrives in the Human Lowlands unannounced and contacts outsiders through a carved riddle-message at an inn: she has intercepted a communication suggesting the Dragonbinders have placed an operative in the Sylvanos court who plans to create an incident that breaks the Treaty of the Whispering Winds. She cannot act officially without revealing her counter-intelligence work to Aeloria.
  • 2 She asks outsiders to deliver a sealed Riddle-etched Scroll to the Obsidian Library's lowest archive — no questions, no opening — and pays in Star-Coins above market rate. The scroll's wax seal is the High Riddle-Keeper's. But Aeloria sent no scroll.

Narrative Value

Nyxara is the Sphinxes' connection to the wider world and the most accessible NPC for outsider player characters. Her double-agent situation creates genuine moral complexity without making her a villain, and she provides hooks that span Sphinx, Elven, and Dragonbinder political arcs.
