Appearance
Physical: Broad and powerfully built, with a lion body of deep ochre fading to rust at the haunches. His wings are unusually wide for his body length, providing exceptional stability in thin mountain air rather than speed. His human face is blunt-featured and weathered, with a three-inch scar crossing his left cheek from a Dragonbinder skirmish ninety years ago.
Clothing: Standard Winged Guardian field-plate worn into comfortable familiarity rather than ceremony; he polishes his soldiers' insignia before his own.
Distinguishing Marks: His third eye has been covered by a self-applied obsidian plate. He claims combat damage. Eyes cycle slowly through brown and amber.
Relationships
- Sorveth Irontalon - His commander, whom he respects without reservation while occasionally disagreeing on strategy. He is the only person in the military hierarchy who tells her directly when he thinks she is wrong.
- Lyss the Resonant - Has recognised Lyss's acoustic mapping as a military intelligence asset and quietly ensures Lyss has an unofficial escort on the most dangerous cavern explorations, without making this visible.
- Aundris the Ancient - Has been told a partial version of the War Protocols in a classified briefing he was not supposed to receive. He has not acknowledged this to Sorveth.
Personality

Backstory
Khandor joined the Winged Guardians during the final Dragonbinder border skirmishes and received six promotions in a century based purely on field assessments from soldiers below him. He never applied for any of them. He is the only Captain-Commander in three centuries to decline a Council seat to remain in active command — his philosophy is that wisdom should protect, not govern. Sorveth made him her second-in-command the day she took charge of the Stone-Sentinels, and he accepted without asking what the role paid.
Daily Life
Khandor runs dawn patrol personally at least three days a week, flying the outer perimeter with a rotating pair of junior Guardians. He briefs incoming patrols personally, eats with his soldiers rather than in the officers' chamber, and spends evenings reviewing incident reports for patterns. He attends Riddle-Circles with genuine interest, finding riddles useful for training recruits in non-linear thinking.
Secret
Khandor's third eye was not damaged in combat. He sealed it voluntarily after it showed him a specific vision — the fall of one of the three citadels — that he has been trying to prevent ever since. He has concealed both the vision and his method from Sorveth and the Council.
Story Hooks
- 1 A patrol has gone missing in the upper peaks during a Star-storm. Khandor will not send more Guardians into the same conditions and needs outsiders who are not his responsibility to search the area where the patrol vanished.
- 2 Khandor approaches the party privately and asks them to retrieve an item from a specific location in the Human Lowlands without telling anyone — including Sorveth. The item connects to the vision he sealed away.
Narrative Value
Khandor is the moral centre of the Sphinx military, contrasting Sorveth's tactical pragmatism with principled warmth. His sealed vision creates a slow-burn subplot and his genuine care for subordinates makes him an ally players will want to protect.
