Appearance

Physical: Very young-looking even accounting for Sphinx age — their lion body is small and tawny, not yet fully muscled, with wings whose feathers still carry the downy overlay of the hatching decade. Their human face is androgynous and expressive, freckled with faint luminescent spots across the bridge of the nose that no one in the Hall of Echoes can fully explain.

Clothing: No formal adornment; they carry a worn satchel filled with hand-drawn acoustic maps, sample stone chips, and a handmade reed instrument used for frequency testing.

Distinguishing Marks: Third eye is vivid green and flutters rapidly when processing acoustic data.

Relationships

  • Keth Voiceshard - Mentor and source of structure; Lyss adores Keth and expresses it by solving every assigned problem faster than expected, then immediately asking for harder ones.
  • Ziora Starweave - Has provided star-chart overlays to correlate Lyss's cavern positions with celestial alignments — a collaboration neither has formally announced to anyone.
  • Sorveth Irontalon - Has quietly flagged Lyss's mapping data as a military intelligence asset and periodically sends an aide to collect updates, which Lyss finds flattering and slightly strange.

Personality

  • Traits: Intensely curious, verbally fast, occasionally loses track of social register when excited about a technical problem, has difficulty sitting through Riddle-Circles without tinkering with something
  • Mannerisms: Hums the resonant frequency of whatever structure they are standing in; presses an ear against stone walls before speaking in any new space; performs calculations by drumming rhythms on their own ribcage
  • Voice: Higher than the Sphinx norm, quick, and surprisingly loud for their size — they have not yet mastered Echo-Stone volume modulation, so conversations occasionally trigger sympathetic vibrations in nearby crystals.

Backstory

Lyss hatched with an ability that alarmed their Essence Pair parents and delighted Keth Voiceshard: perfect acoustic memory. They can replay any sound they have ever heard, including conversations from years prior, at full fidelity. Keth took them as an apprentice within a decade of hatching, skipping the standard riddling-trial curriculum to place them directly in the Hall of Echoes. Since then Lyss has memorised the resonant signature of every room in all three citadels and is working — unasked — on building an acoustic map of the entire mountain range. They have located seventeen cavern systems that appear on no official chart.

Daily Life

Lyss wakes before the Dawn Echo and lies still, listening to the mountain's vibrations shift with temperature change. Formal training hours are spent in the Hall of Echoes calibrating Echo-Stone Resonators under Keth's supervision. Afternoons Lyss explores unmapped caverns, leaving sound-markers only they can follow. They eat quickly, barely attending to food, and forget to attend Riddle-Circles roughly half the time.

Secret

One of the seventeen unmapped caverns contains a sound Lyss cannot reproduce from memory — a repeating tone of unknown origin, seeming to come from deeper than geological surveys suggest is possible. They have not told Keth because Lyss never reports what they cannot explain.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Lyss asks outsiders to accompany them into the deepest unmapped cavern — the one with the unexplained tone — because Keth has forbidden solo entry and Lyss is unwilling to wait for official permission.
  • 2 Lyss's acoustic memory replays a conversation overheard three years ago that they now realise constitutes evidence of something serious. They need outsiders to help them understand what to do with information they cannot unhear.

Narrative Value

Lyss is the young prodigy in over their head — a source of comic energy and genuine discovery. Their unmapped cavern system provides a dungeon-exploration anchor, and the unexplained deep-mountain tone seeds a longer mystery connecting to Sphinx origin lore.
