KETH VOICESHARD

Sphinxes

Master Echo-Engineer of the Hall of Echoes

KETH VOICESHARD serves as Master Echo-Engineer of the Hall of Echoes within Sphinxes. KETH VOICESHARD is identified as Sphinx. Primary residence: The Hall of Echoes, Sun-Scarred Peaks. Known affiliation: Echo-Engineers' Guild. Commonly described traits include Traits: Exacting, quietly proud, generous with knowledge to those who demonstrate they will use it properly, completely uninterested in social hierarchy beyond what competence warrants, Mannerisms: Taps surfaces with one claw to test acoustic properties before sitting or standing anywhere for long; speaks in deliberately measured cadence, treating conversation as another frequency to be calibrated; holds extended silences that they use to listen to the Echo-Stone harmonics in walls, and Voice: A controlled, mid-range sound with deliberate harmonic layering — they speak in two pitches simultaneously, a technique that required decades to master and that other Sphinxes find either fascinating or deeply unsettling..

Sphinx Age: 920 Non-binary

"A riddle asked in silence carries more weight than one spoken aloud. Most of my colleagues have not learned this. I have nine hundred years of patience for when they do."

Appearance

Physical: Compact and powerfully built, with a lion body whose fur is dark charcoal streaked with white lines that follow the paths of old sonic resonance tests — permanent sub-dermal vibration marks from nine centuries of working at close range with Echo-Stone Resonators. Their wings are shorter-spanned than average but exceptionally broad, engineered by long habit into near-perfect acoustic reflectors. Their face is angular and precise, and their luminous eyes are almost always a flat, steady silver — the colour of focus.

Clothing: A close-fitted working harness of dark leather hung with seven Echo-Stone Resonators of varying sizes, each tuned to a different harmonic frequency. The smallest, worn at the throat, they never remove. The tools leave faint vibration trails in the air when they move quickly.

Distinguishing Marks: Their sonic roar was damaged in a Resonator accident three centuries ago — it no longer shatters stone but instead produces a sound that causes all nearby Echo-Stones to sing in sympathetic resonance. They consider the trade an improvement.

Relationships

  • Chronomancer Vyr - Professional rival whose debate about the primacy of Sound versus Time they genuinely enjoy — one of the few Sphinxes who matches their energy for extended technical argument. They would not call it friendship. Neither would Vyr. Both are wrong.
  • Tharax Obsidian - The Stone-Sentinel commander relies on Keth to maintain the sonic shockwave systems that defend the three citadels. Their working relationship is entirely transactional and entirely reliable.
  • Aeloria Sunbreak - They respect the High Riddle-Keeper's intellect and have provided Echo-Engineering support for the Obsidian Library's acoustic archives for centuries. Keth is one of the few who notices that Aeloria's third eye has been glowing slightly brighter than usual for the past decade.

Personality

  • Traits: Exacting, quietly proud, generous with knowledge to those who demonstrate they will use it properly, completely uninterested in social hierarchy beyond what competence warrants
  • Mannerisms: Taps surfaces with one claw to test acoustic properties before sitting or standing anywhere for long; speaks in deliberately measured cadence, treating conversation as another frequency to be calibrated; holds extended silences that they use to listen to the Echo-Stone harmonics in walls
  • Voice: A controlled, mid-range sound with deliberate harmonic layering — they speak in two pitches simultaneously, a technique that required decades to master and that other Sphinxes find either fascinating or deeply unsettling.

Backstory

Keth was born to a pair of Riddle-Mages who expected them to follow the same path. At age forty they sat the Riddling Trials that would determine their discipline and answered every riddle correctly but in reverse order — solutions first, questions following — which technically violated no rule but scandalized the examiners enough that there was serious debate about admissibility. The Echo-Engineers' Guild Master, who was observing, laughed for the first time in a decade and claimed them on the spot. For nine centuries Keth has refined Echo-Stone Resonator technology, invented the Harmonic Lattice construction method that reduced the Hall of Echoes' acoustic dead zones from thirty to two, and written the technical codex that every Echo-Engineer now trains on. They have twice been offered a Council seat representing the principle of Sound and twice declined, on the grounds that the Council talks far too much and listens insufficiently.

Daily Life

Keth divides their day between the Hall of Echoes' maintenance tunnels, where they personally inspect the Resonator arrays, and the workshop where they design new configurations. They teach three apprentices in concurrent rotation — never the same lesson to all three, because they believe engineers learn by solving different problems and comparing notes. They attend Riddle-Circles occasionally and always leave after exactly one hour, having contributed one riddle and one answer, never more.

Secret

Keth has discovered that the Hall of Echoes' deepest resonance chamber contains a sound that does not originate from any Resonator — a frequency that predates the Hall's construction by millennia, rising from the mountain itself. They have been recording and studying it in secret for forty years. It carries what they believe is a pattern — not random, not geological. They are not yet certain whether it is language, prophecy, or a warning.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Keth hires outsiders to bring them a specific type of deep-cave Echo-Bat that roosts in territory the Winged Guardians cannot enter without diplomatic incident — the bat's echolocation frequency matches the unknown sound from the Hall of Echoes' basement, and Keth needs a living sample.
  • 2 A Riddle-Mage was found dead in the Hall of Echoes with no visible wounds — the body shows internal damage consistent with a concentrated sonic burst at close range. Keth knows what weapon could have done this, because they invented it and it is missing from their workshop.

Narrative Value

Keth provides access to the sonic and acoustic dimensions of Sphinx magic and serves as the specialist contact for any investigation involving the Hall of Echoes. Their secret discovery offers a civilisation-scale mystery hook, and their refusal of the Council seat makes them a trustworthy outsider-within the power structure.
