Geography

Situated on a high mountain plateau near the center of the Sun-Scarred Peaks range, the Hall is a vast open-roofed chamber shaped from sun-baked stone and lined with Echo-Stone Resonators that magnify sound across its entire interior. Concentric rings of carved stone seating surround a central dais where riddles are posed and answered.

Climate

Open to the sky, the Hall of Echoes is fully exposed to the perpetual dusk of the peaks and the sweeping aurora displays that accompany Star-storms. The thin, cold air carries sound with unusual clarity, a natural property that the Sphinxes have amplified through magical engineering.

History

The Hall of Echoes is believed to be among the oldest constructed spaces in the Sun-Scarred Peaks, predating the formal Riddle Covenant that now governs Sphinx society. It served as the staging ground for diplomatic exchanges with the Human Empire of Azaria, where Sphinx Oracles delivered their prophetic counsel before the empire's betrayal ended the alliance. In the present age it remains the seat of Sphinx governance and the formal venue through which Riddle-Ambassadors are dispatched to the courts of Landorya's other civilizations.

Legend & Lore

It is whispered among the Sphinxes that the Hall of Echoes was not built by mortal paw or claw, but that the first Riddle-Mothers sang the mountain itself open, coaxing the plateau stone into its great concentric rings through a sequence of unanswerable questions, questions so vast that the rock had no choice but to yield and remember. To this day, elder Sphinxes claim that on the anniversary of Azaria's betrayal, a voice not belonging to any living creature rises from the central dais at dusk, repeating in perfect cadence the final riddle posed to the Azarian Emperor before the alliance shattered. No one who has heard it twice is said to have kept their full wits. Some younger initiates insist the Echo-Stone Resonators do not merely amplify sound, but preserve it, that every riddle ever spoken in the Hall still lives inside the stone, layered and waiting, and that the structure is slowly filling with questions it will one day release all at once.

Life & Culture

Life within the Hall of Echoes is governed by a near-sacred discipline of silence and precision, for careless speech becomes thunderous proclamation inside its resonating walls, a cultural pressure that has shaped Sphinx oratory into something extraordinarily deliberate and spare. Deliberation sessions begin at sunrise, when the light pours through the open roof and strikes the central dais at an angle the Sphinxes call the Illuminated Moment, considered the only time during which a new covenant clause may be lawfully proposed. Riddle-Ambassadors preparing to depart for foreign courts undergo their final formal examination here, reciting their assigned riddles across the full length of the chamber while the assembled elders listen for flaws in phrasing, cadence, or intent that the Echo-Stone Resonators will ruthlessly expose. Between formal sessions, junior Sphinxes are permitted to sit in the outermost ring of carved seating to practice sub-vocalized riddle composition, speaking barely above a breath, yet still audible to the stone, in a discipline believed to cultivate control over both tongue and thought.
