Appearance

Physical: Ancient beyond the visible markers Sphinxes use to read age — her lion body is pale grey and translucent at the extremities, faintly luminous at dusk. Her wings are enormous but ragged at the trailing edges, not from injury but from sheer time. Her human face carries the particular stillness of something very old that has learned to wait.

Clothing: None; she stopped wearing adornment at some point so distant she does not remember when.

Distinguishing Marks: Her eyes no longer cycle — a fixed, almost colourless pale blue. Her third eye is closed and sealed with what appears to be a self-applied scar of Chrono-Sand residue.

Relationships

  • High Riddle-Keeper Aeloria - The second of the two conversations Celynna has initiated in five thousand years. She told Aeloria something about the First Riddle that Aeloria has never repeated to the Council.
  • Symneth Stoneread - They have met twice in their combined seven thousand years of existence and found both meetings useful in ways neither has explained to others.
  • Sorveth Irontalon - Has sent scouts to Celynna's ridge twice. Celynna sent them back each time with a single sentence that Sorveth has spent years trying to interpret.

Personality

  • Traits: Neither hostile nor welcoming, simply present — the most purely present being most visitors will ever encounter, with no appetite for social performance and a terrifying gentleness when she speaks
  • Mannerisms: Answers questions with a long pause followed by a question about why the visitor wants to know; always faces east; has ceased using formal Sphinxian in favour of something older that requires listeners to follow the emotional undertone to understand meaning
  • Voice: Very quiet, very low, with a subsonic resonance that visitors feel in their bones. She speaks slowly, each word given its full weight.

Backstory

Celynna predates the Council of the Nine Riddles. She was present at the event Sphinxes call the First Riddle, which she insists was literal rather than mythological. She voluntarily left the peaks before the Council formed, citing a disagreement with the emerging governance structure she has never fully explained. She sealed her third eye a century later, saying she grew tired of seeing what was coming. In the outer ridges she has spent millennia observing the civilization from outside, arriving at conclusions she shares only when she determines the time is correct. In five thousand years she has spoken to the Council twice.

Daily Life

Celynna watches the peaks each morning, tracking Star-storm movements, high-wind echo patterns, and the behaviour of the Golden Griffin of the Sun-Scar — whom she considers a more reliable indicator of civilizational health than any Council report. She composes riddles she carves into cliff faces; she has filled seventeen cliff faces over the centuries. She keeps no company except occasional travelers who lose their way on the outer ridges and discover, to their surprise, that she will speak to them.

Secret

Celynna knows where the Sphinxes actually came from — the literal account, not the mythological one — and has been deciding for five thousand years whether the civilization is ready to know. She has reached a conclusion. She is waiting for the right person to tell.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Celynna appears at the edge of a party's camp on the outer ridges at dawn, says a single sentence, and disappears. The sentence is an archaic Sphinxian riddle that, solved, reveals the location of something buried beneath the peaks since before the civilization was founded.
  • 2 A traveler seeking Celynna is found on the outer ridges, injured and clutching a fragment of her cliff carving that appears to describe future events in specific, verifiable detail.

Narrative Value

Celynna is the civilizational deep-mystery character — she embodies the gap between myth and history and holds the key to the Sphinx origin secret. She is maximally useful when the campaign is ready to answer its largest questions.
