Appearance
Physical: Medium-built and shadow-comfortable, with the particular stillness of someone trained to be invisible in the dark. His skin is deep brown, his hair black and closely cropped, and his dark eyes have the wide, adapted quality of someone who has spent fifteen years operating by moonlight and bioluminescent fungi-glow. He moves very quietly for his size.
Clothing: Dark-dyed wool coat over militia standard kit, with a broad-brimmed hat he wears tilted forward at a specific angle that shades his eyes while letting him track lateral movement. He carries a short sling rather than a bow — quicker in enclosed spaces, quieter when he needs quiet.
Distinguishing Marks: A faded tattoo of the Spiral of Seasons on the back of his neck, applied by a traveling Halfling artist and partially obscured by a scar from a torch-fall that also introduced a permanent kink in how he holds his head when focused.
Relationships
- Grover Ashenbrew - Pre-shift dinner companion and the person Brix most frequently shares observations with — their nightly exchange has been going on for six years and constitutes an informal intelligence-sharing arrangement that neither has formalized
- Tibalt Wrenshoulde - Militia colleague whose daytime boundary activities Brix monitors from the night side; he has noticed the Scout Captain's behavior patterns shifting over the past eight months and has not yet decided what to do with the observation
Personality
- Comfortable with silence and other people's discomfort with it — he does not fill pauses and regards those who do with a measured, non-judgmental attention that is harder to endure than disapproval

Backstory
Brix joined the Militia at twenty-three after five years as a courier on the overnight routes between Burrowtowns — routes that required moving through unlit terrain with cargo and no escort, a job he found suited him. The Night Watch assignment in Thistledown was his first Militia posting and he has never requested a transfer, working his way from sentry to commander in fifteen years of uninterrupted night service. He has never missed a shift. He is the person who knows everything that happens in Thistledown between dusk and dawn, a fact the Council finds useful and that certain other parties find inconvenient.
Daily Life
Brix sleeps from mid-morning to late afternoon and is in motion from dusk onward. His watch involves three circuit patterns through Thistledown — a predictable outer patrol for visibility, an unpredictable inner circuit for coverage, and a third route he has never mapped or discussed with anyone. He maintains a detailed night-log in a cipher he developed for personal use, and reviews the previous month's log every fortnight to identify deviations from established patterns. He eats one large meal before his shift, at the Burrow's Rest, where Grover has standing instructions to have something ready.
Secret
Three months ago, Brix observed someone he recognized — a Council-adjacent figure — meeting with an unknown party at the boundary of Thistledown's outer perimeter at the third hour of night. The exchange was brief, physical, and clearly prearranged. He wrote it in his cipher log, has not reported it, and has been watching the same location every night since. The meetings recur every two weeks. The unknown party always approaches from the north.
Story Hooks
- 1 Brix contacts outsiders during the day — not his natural hours, which they should note — and shows them a single page from his cipher log with a time, a location, and a question mark; he says only that something is happening at that location tonight and that he would like independent witnesses
- 2 Something has gone wrong in the section of Thistledown that Brix's third, unmapped circuit covers — a storage tunnel collapsed with no structural cause, three residents have reported the same unusual sound on different nights, and Brix has found a physical object at the site that should not exist there
Narrative Value
Brix is the eyes and ears of the night — a character who has been accumulating evidence of something wrong without the authority or allies to act on it alone. His methodical nature and precise observation make him an ideal information source, and his covert vigil creates a ready-made conspiracy entry point for players operating in Thistledown.
