Appearance

Physical: Young and not yet fully grown into his tail, which at twelve feet still lacks the confident musculature of an adult Naga — he moves with the slight over-correction of someone who has recently been told to slow down. His scales are bright sea-green, vivid and unworn, with bioluminescent patterns that flash involuntarily when he is startled or excited, a source of considerable professional embarrassment during nest-watch duties.

Clothing: The grey Water-Warden apprentice's wrap, which he keeps immaculately clean in an overcompensation for his youth that senior wardens find endearing and occasionally irritating.

Distinguishing Marks: A healing bite scar on his left cheek from a hatchling — three weeks old, barely deeper than a scratch — which he mentions with performative modesty at every available opportunity.

Relationships

  • Head Warden Rheya - Mentor whose approval he values beyond what is professionally reasonable, whose disapproval devastates him for approximately twelve hours before he recovers and recalibrates, and whose past he is accidentally researching without knowing it
  • Senior Warden Oss - The warden he circumvented during the unauthorized protocol incident — Oss has since become his most reliable working partner because Korral has never made the same mistake twice and Oss respects that more than the original error surprised her
  • Archivist Dressel of Delta-Haven - The Halfling scholar whose correspondence with Rheya he accidentally read when it arrived during her absence — he returned it unopened and has not mentioned it, but the trade-log reference to a hatchery collapse is now cross-referenced in his private research notes

Backstory

Korral left his clutch-group at twenty — two years earlier than the Naga standard — because his Nest-Guardian believed his memory and observational aptitude would stagnate in a generalist apprenticeship. The recommendation to the Hatchery Council was strong enough to place him under Head Warden Rheya directly, which Korral understood as an honor and which Rheya understood as the Council depositing a problem child on her threshold. His first year produced eleven pages of improvement proposals for hatchery flood-alert protocols, a minor incident when he attempted to implement one of them without authorization during a monsoon swell, and four months of remedial trust-building with the senior wardens he had inadvertently circumvented. In his second year, he has not implemented anything without authorization and has consequently improved dramatically in every metric except originality, which Rheya watches with quiet concern. He has begun studying the historical records of the flood that produced the Hatchery's modern protocols — the same flood that saved Rheya's egg — without knowing his mentor's connection to it.

Daily Life

Korral rises before the dawn bell to review the overnight temperature logs and compare them against the baseline he has been compiling since his first week. He assists Rheya on the morning nest-rounds, taking secondary observations and resisting the impulse to offer analysis until asked. Afternoons he studies in the hatchery archive, currently cross-referencing historical flood events with the monsoon-prediction models the Pearlspire Tide-Weavers use — a project he has not disclosed to Rheya yet because he suspects where the research leads. He joins Tide-Singing practice with the current hatchling cohort in the evenings, at which he is genuinely good, and considers it the most professionally legitimate thing he does.

Secret

Korral's archive research has turned up a discrepancy in the Hatchery's official flood record — the record states seven eggs were swept away, but a secondary count in a junior warden's personal log lists six. The difference of one egg matches exactly the scenario required for the unnamed warden's death to have been a deliberate choice rather than an accident. He has not told Rheya because he is not certain the information is correct, and because he has a precise understanding of what it would cost her to hear it.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Korral approaches outsiders privately in the hatchery archive, requesting help accessing a restricted section of the Pearlspire historical records that requires a senior Naga signature he cannot obtain without explaining why he wants it.
  • 2 A newly hatched member of the current cohort imprints on Korral during the bonding ceremony rather than on its assigned Nest-Guardian — a rare event that the Venom-Priest calls an omen and that Rheya calls a management problem, and that Korral has three conflicting theories about.

Narrative Value

Korral is the civilizational newcomer — a young Naga just beginning to discover that the institutions he reveres contain the same contradictions as every other institution. He is a sympathetic point-of-view character for players exploring Naga society for the first time, and his research thread connects directly to Rheya's buried secret.
