Appearance

Physical: Young and carrying the uncertain physicality of a Naga who has not yet decided how to inhabit his size — a wide-shouldered torso on a tail of fifteen feet in bright cerulean scales that bioluminesce in irregular bursts when he is emotionally activated, which is frequently. His eyes are a deep gold that the priests of Venara note with significance and that he has learned to treat with deliberate skepticism.

Clothing: The white acolyte robes of the Coral-Throne, worn correctly but always slightly disheveled in a way that suggests the energy going into thinking is being redirected from the energy going into presentation.

Distinguishing Marks: Both palms are marked with the ritual Scale-Blessing scars of his acolyte ordination, which should have faded by now but have not — a detail the senior clergy have noted in three separate review documents without explanation.

Relationships

  • High Venom-Priest Ssolveth - His primary supervisor and the author of his theological review — a relationship of genuine intellectual respect on Thessyk's side and carefully managed concern on Ssolveth's, since Thessyk is asking the questions that would expose the suppressed crystal; Ssolveth has been trying to redirect rather than suppress Thessyk's research because he believes suppression would produce exactly the outcome he is trying to prevent
  • Tide-Singer Phyrren Scalebard - A teacher relationship that has become more complex than either of them intended — Thessyk's Scale-Dance practice has begun producing bioluminescent patterns in his palms that match the notation in the ancient crystal Phyrren memorized; Phyrren has not told him this
  • Venom-Painter Myrre Glowtide - A recent but intense creative collaboration — Myrre recognized in Thessyk's movement practice the same sequence she saw in her unsanctioned vision, and she has been sharing materials with him without explaining why; he finds her information useful and her reticence maddening

Backstory

Thessyk entered the Coral-Throne acolyte program at twenty-two because the theological questions he had accumulated since childhood had reached a volume that required institutional resources to address. He was considered an exemplary student for six years. Then he submitted a research paper arguing that the second half of the First Coil rite — the section that canonical texts describe but do not explain — may have originally contained instructions for a type of water-communion that would allow living Naga to access the memories stored in the oldest pre-canon water-memory crystals directly, bypassing the need for a reader crystal. The paper was returned without comment. He has been under theological review ever since and continues to research the question through whatever access he can obtain.

Daily Life

Thessyk's official acolyte duties — temple maintenance, liturgical support for Venom Communion ceremonies, archive access for approved research — occupy his mornings. Afternoons he pursues unauthorized research through three simultaneous approaches: conversations with Archivist Sorryn about historical gaps, Scale-Dance sessions with Phyrren that he has begun to understand as containing encoded information, and a private practice of attempting the communion technique described in his paper, which has produced no results he can document and one experience he cannot explain.

Secret

Thessyk's one unexplainable experience during his private communion practice was a moment of seventeen seconds during which he heard — clearly, in a voice speaking old Nagari — the complete text of the second half of the First Coil rite. He transcribed it immediately. The transcription is hidden in the binding of his personal Codex of Currents copy. He has not verified it against any source because he does not have access to any source it could be verified against — and he knows the moment he shows it to anyone, the review becomes a crisis.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Thessyk approaches the players with a single page torn from his personal Codex — the transcription — and asks them to find someone outside the Council's authority who can verify whether the text is real. He offers the only thing he has: the location of the cave where his communion experience occurred, which is not in the Coral-Throne.
  • 2 During a public Venom Communion ceremony that Thessyk is assisting with, his Scale-Dance bioluminescent patterns spontaneously illuminate the full notation of his transcribed rite on the water's surface, visible to every participant.

Narrative Value

Thessyk is the active seeker who connects all the theological mysteries of Naga civilization — the suppressed crystal, the ancient Tide-Song, the Scale-Dance notation — into a single living investigation. He is the youngest major thread in the web, and the one most likely to pull everything loose at once.
