Appearance

Physical: Broad-shouldered and dense with muscle, his pearl-toned skin carries a constant faint bioluminescent flush along the jaw and shoulders — a side-effect of prolonged exposure to the Gate's resonant pressure-crystals. Coral tattoos run in tight bands around his wrists and biceps, soldier's marks rather than decorative: each represents a Tide-Warden engagement survived.

Clothing: Rarely seen outside pressure-forged coral plate, midnight-grey and traced with abyssal-blue sea runes. His trident-spear, Halstorm, has a head of Pearl-Steel and a haft wrapped in cured leviathan-hide.

Distinguishing Marks: The ring finger of his left hand is fused into the webbing — the result of a compressed-water detonation during the Gate skirmish of his sixty-third year. He considers it a structural improvement.

Relationships

  • Thalindra Deepcurrent - His commanding political authority; he respects her intelligence and distrusts her tendency to solve military problems with diplomatic patience. He would follow her into the Bleached Shallows if she ordered it.
  • Nyxel Swiftcurrent - The Current-Seeker he has come to rely on for pre-patrol current mapping; he acknowledges her skill while refusing to admit she is the reason the Gate's incident rate dropped by a third since her assignment.
  • Selamar Voidwave - A Sonar-Singer attached to the Gate for signal work; Korvan finds their unconventional methods professionally irritating and results-wise indispensable.

Backstory

Korvan was born in the outer citadel district of Pelagius to a family of Pearl-Crab tenders who expected him to continue the trade. He completed the Rite of the First Dive three weeks early by bribing his age-cohort to stay behind, descended alone, and returned with a pressure-crystal twice the expected minimum. The Abyssal Guard recruiter waiting at the surface offered him a position before he had dried off. Seventy years of service later he holds the most strategically sensitive command in the Ocearan military: the Cerulean Gate, the only passage connecting the inner ocean basin to the outer deep. He has repelled three unauthorized incursions, negotiated two standoffs with Pyrakian prospectors, and once turned away a Celestial Order inspector by citing a subsection of the Cerulean Codex the inspector had not known existed.

Daily Life

Korvan runs the Gate on a strict rotation: four hours of watch personally at the pressure-rune console, two hours of troop evaluation and drill assessment, two hours of correspondence with the Pelagius Ministry of Defense, and whatever remains is for sleep — which he consistently shortchanges. He tastes every ration personally before distribution, not from paranoia but because he once nearly lost a watch shift to a spoiled kelp-batch.

Secret

During the second Pyrakian standoff, Korvan allowed a small cargo of unregistered pressure-crystals to pass through the Gate in exchange for intelligence on Pyrakian troop dispositions. The intelligence was accurate. The exchange was never reported. He is not sure whether he would do it again.

Story Hooks

  • 1 A Coral-Core Sentinel at the Gate has begun responding to commands in an unregistered Tide-Glyph dialect that should not exist — Korvan needs someone who can investigate without logging an official incident report.
  • 2 A body is found wedged in the Gate's pressure-arch with no marks of violence and a polished pearl-core sphere — the Ocearan diplomatic gift — sealed in its hand; Korvan has forty-eight hours before the discovery must be disclosed to the Council.

Narrative Value

Korvan is the gatekeeper archetype — literally and narratively. He controls access, holds a moral compromise in his past, and represents the tension between military necessity and Ocearan law. He makes a credible ally, a difficult obstacle, and a compelling anti-hero.
