RIVEN DOLPHINBOND
OcearaJunior Bond-Trainer, Tide-Dolphin Liaison Corps
RIVEN DOLPHINBOND serves as Junior Bond-Trainer, Tide-Dolphin Liaison Corps within Oceara. RIVEN DOLPHINBOND is identified as Ocearan. Primary residence: Dolphin Stable Quarter, outer Pelagius ring. Known affiliation: Ministry of Deep-Works — Transport and Liaison Division. Commonly described traits include Traits: Forthright about dolphins and diplomatically imprecise about everything else; genuinely more comfortable in water than on land and in dolphin company than human company, a preference she does not try to disguise and that most of her colleagues have stopped taking personally, Mannerisms: Maintains eye contact at a slightly different angle than most Oceanara, a result of adapting to dolphin visual field conventions; translates dolphin behavioral states into human emotional vocabulary as a running commentary in conversation without being asked; gives dolphins better names than she gives people, and Voice: A light soprano with an unusual range extension in the lower register, the result of sixty years of dolphin-frequency practice; she can produce the lower range of Tide-Dolphin communication frequencies by choice but typically forgets she is doing it when under stress.
"Silverflank knows things I have not taught him. I used to find that surprising. Now I find it instructive."

Identity
Appearance
Physical: Young by Ocearan standards and showing it in the restless energy of her movement, though her hands are always still — the trained stillness of someone who learned early that sudden motion disrupts dolphin focus; her skin is a bright cyan with bioluminescent markings that shift pattern in response to emotional states with very little suppression, something her supervisors have noted is a professional liability and her dolphins appear to find useful.
Clothing: Minimal working kit — a sleeveless kelp-fiber tunic and flexible pressure shorts suitable for sustained swimming, with a dolphin-communication reed on a wrist strap that she uses in training and forgets to remove when she is not; a small biometric monitor around her neck that tracks her bonded dolphins' location and stress states.
Distinguishing Marks: Silverflank's original bond-mark on her left inner wrist — a faint bioluminescent impression where his sonar pulse first contacted her at close range at age eight, which has not faded in sixty-three years.
Relationships
- Zerantha Leviathanrider - The senior Tide-Warden whose Leviathan-bond work Riven studies with the intensity of someone watching the future of her own career; Zerantha is aware of this and occasionally sends her observations Riven was not supposed to receive through official channels.
- Nyxel Swiftcurrent - The scout who uses Tide-Dolphins for rapid-response patrol and who is the only colleague whose operational dependence on Riven's training output matches the quality of attention Riven brings to producing it.
Personality

Backstory
Riven formed her first Tide-Dolphin bond at eight, illegally and with a pod member her family kept for cargo transport. The bond registered when the dolphin — named Silverflank — refused all commands except hers and became useless for cargo, obliging the Transport Division to place Riven in the junior trainer program a decade below the standard minimum age. She is now the fastest bond-forming trainer the Division has processed in recorded history, with nine active bonds across six dolphin pods — two and a half times the previous specialist record, which her supervisors describe as physiologically implausible and which she has offered to demonstrate the mechanism of if they provide sufficient observation time.
Daily Life
Riven spends approximately two-thirds of each working day in water alongside the bonded pod members in her sector, conducting the sustained contact that maintains bond integrity and using the daily observation time to monitor behavioral states across all nine bonds simultaneously — a cognitive task her supervisors initially believed was impossible and have stopped arguing about. Afternoons she files behavioral reports in a format she designed herself because the standard form did not include fields for the information she was actually observing. Evenings she stays late, recording Silverflank's vocalizations on a crystal-capture device she purchased from her own wage allocation.
Secret
Silverflank has been producing a specific vocalization for four months that Riven has never heard from any dolphin: a low, patterned sound that causes visible disorientation in the other bonded dolphins of the pod. She has been recording it. Last week she discovered that the pattern matches, at a different frequency scale, the sub-audible signal Sylvar Sonarweave has been composing responses to — a connection she made by accident when Sylvar's evening practice session reached the outer ring and Silverflank's response to it was immediate, specific, and alarmed. She has not made contact with Sylvar and does not yet know how.
Story Hooks
- 1 Silverflank leads Riven on a non-standard patrol route toward the restricted trench-facing wall section, then refuses to proceed further, producing the unknown vocalization continuously — the same reaction Coressa Crabarden's Pearl-Crabs are showing on the other side of the same wall from inside the citadel.
- 2 Riven approaches outsiders because Silverflank has selected one of them specifically: approached, circled, and produced his bond-initiation pulse, which he has not done with any individual in sixty-three years except Riven herself.
Narrative Value
Riven and Silverflank provide the animal-behavioral thread of the central mystery — a non-verbal, non-institutional signal that something is wrong, coming from creatures whose sensitivity to deep-ocean conditions predates the Oceara's ability to measure those conditions scientifically.
