Appearance

Physical: Built for riding rather than standing — long legs, shorter torso, with the characteristic lean musculature of someone who spent decades on drake-back. His ember-red skin is marked across his left shoulder by parallel scarring from a fire-scaled drake's distress reaction during the incident that ended his service. His amber eyes are permanently restless, tracking movement.

Clothing: His Magma Rider uniform jacket, worn unbuttoned over market-district clothes in a way that might be sentiment or might be the only jacket he owns. Old Pyrosteel riding bracers, the left set replaced with civilian ones after the shoulder injury.

Distinguishing Marks: The shoulder scarring is visible above his collar; the way he stands in open spaces, facing outward with a slight forward lean, marks him as someone accustomed to high altitude.

Relationships

  • Magma Rider Commander Syth Wingfire - His former commander who approved his declination of reassignment out of respect and checks in monthly in ways that are not check-ins — he buys things at Drak's market stall, if Drak has one, and mentions available postings incidentally
  • Drake-handler Lys Coalscale - The woman who cared for Ember in the stables and who Drak cannot visit without the visit becoming something he is not ready for; she leaves food at his building's entrance on Ember's birthday without making contact
  • Market trader Rosha Embercrack - A market neighbor who has begun giving him small tasks when she notices his restlessness becoming visible, understanding that the tasks matter less than the having of them

Personality

Backstory

Drak rode for the Magma Riders for thirty-nine years, bonded to a fire-scaled drake he named Ember at the animal's assignment to him when she was three years old. Their partnership was considered one of the Riders' strongest — Drak had an instinctive attunement with Ember that his commanders attributed to the pyromantic sensitivity common in effective Riders. The bonding ended eighteen months ago when Ember was killed during a border patrol encounter he has been administratively cleared of contributing to. The Riders offered him reassignment to a new drake. He declined. He has not found anything to do since that does not feel like waiting for something he cannot name.

Daily Life

Drak spends his days in the Cinder Fair district without a fixed schedule, which is the primary problem. He wakes early by habit, eats at the market, and fills time with conversations, odd tasks people need doing that require strength or height-comfort, and extended visits to the outer walls where he can see sky unobstructed by city structures. He avoids the Magma Riders' district and has not entered the drake stables since Ember's death.

Secret

Drak knows what happened on the patrol where Ember died and it was not what the administrative clearance report describes. The border encounter was not an encounter — Ember reacted to something underground, something beneath the volcanic plain that produced a sound or pressure Drak did not perceive himself. He has been trying to find a Lava-Shaper who will take him back to the site to investigate what Ember detected, and everyone he has asked has told him the area is restricted under a Ministry classification issued three weeks after Ember died.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Drak approaches travelers quietly in the market district, asking whether any of them have experience with volcanic sound phenomena or geothermal anomalies — framing it as personal curiosity before explaining what Ember reacted to and what the Ministry restriction tells him
  • 2 He offers his skills — navigation in volcanic terrain, altitude scouting, and physical capability — in exchange for help reaching the restricted site, and is absolutely clear that he does not want justice or acknowledgment; he needs to know what Ember heard

Narrative Value

Drak introduces the Magma Riders as a human dimension rather than a military unit, and his personal thread connects to whatever is beneath the restricted volcanic plain. His grief is specific and action-oriented, making him a natural ally for parties investigating geothermal or underground mysteries.
