Appearance

Physical: Ancient even by Sphinx standards, her lion body pale as bleached bone, her fur having faded to near-white with faint silver tracery along her flanks. Nearly immobile on the ground — her joints have calcified with great age — but in the air her wings remain strong, the feathers having turned from black to deep charcoal that seems to absorb light.

Clothing: Wears a simple archival sash bearing the wax-seal of the Living Archive — the only official insignia she has kept from three thousand years of institutional appointments.

Distinguishing Marks: Her eyes have settled into a fixed deep violet that no longer cycles. Her third eye emits a steady, cold blue.

Relationships

  • Chronomancer Vyr - Profound mutual respect and equal methodological disagreement — she preserves the past while he manipulates the future. They share tea in the Observatory once a year and argue pleasantly about whether either approach is philosophically defensible.
  • High Riddle-Keeper Aeloria - Miravel knows the truth about the Endless Night riddle from records Aeloria did not know existed. She has said nothing for three thousand years and considers this a professional courtesy.
  • Tarex Bladequill - The young Riddle-Duelist who visits the archive more than any other young Sphinx; she finds his hunger for historical precedent refreshing.

Personality

  • Traits: Preternaturally calm, possessed of perfect recall, measures every statement against centuries of precedent before responding, has little patience for redundancy or repetition
  • Mannerisms: Quotes exact dates for events that occurred millennia ago without checking sources; communicates much through precise positioning of her wingtips rather than movement; speaks always in past tense about the present, as though already recording it
  • Voice: Soft and papery, with a subsonic undertone that makes listeners feel they are being read rather than addressed.

Backstory

Miravel was Vyr's predecessor as Chrono-Scribe Prime, predating his discovery of the Chrono-Sands by three centuries. She built the Living Archive — a wing of the Obsidian Library where chronicles are written in Chrono-Sand ink that can be replayed rather than merely read, so events may be witnessed rather than studied. When Vyr arrived and redefined Chrono-Scribe work around temporal manipulation, she declined his invitation to join his research, turning the Living Archive instead into the most complete historical record on the continent. She holds memory of events no other living being witnessed.

Daily Life

Miravel rarely leaves the Library. She receives one petitioner per day seeking historical information, charges her fee in a riddle she has not heard before — a rare commodity after three thousand years — and spends remaining time in the Living Archive revising and cross-referencing records. She has been working on the complete index for four hundred years and estimates approximately two more centuries to finish.

Secret

The Living Archive contains a replay of an event that occurred a thousand years before the Sphinxes' own recorded history — a confrontation at the founding of the peaks suggesting the Sphinxes did not originate where they believe. She has classified the replay and shown it to no one.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Miravel summons outsiders because they carry, unknowingly, an artifact that appears in the classified replay — and she needs to know how it came to exist outside the archive.
  • 2 The Living Archive has been accessed without permission: one replay is missing, and the thief left behind a riddle in a Glyphic Spiral no Sphinx recognises, written in what appears to be future tense.

Narrative Value

Miravel is the civilizational memory — an exposition resource of extraordinary depth who carries real stakes. Her classified replay creates the central Sphinx origin mystery and her knowledge of Aeloria's incomplete riddle-solution gives her quiet leverage over the civilization's most powerful figure.
