Appearance

Physical: Barely past hatchling proportions, slender and earnest-looking with a lion body of warm golden-brown and wings that have just finished their adult plumage — still slightly uneven at the trailing edges where the last pinfeathers are dropping.

Clothing: Novice temple grey, kept immaculately clean in the way of someone who arrived at religious practice late and is still slightly overperforming devotion.

Distinguishing Marks: His human face is young and openly expressive in a way he has been told repeatedly to moderate. Eyes cycle between bright green and pale gold faster than almost any other Sphinx. Third eye is large, bright, and blinks too fast when he is nervous.

Relationships

  • Baroth Sunforge - His former employer, who considers Phoros's religious turn philosophically baffling and practically inconvenient. They still have lunch occasionally, and Baroth does not mention the frequency, and Phoros does not mention why he knows what it means to Baroth's experimental chamber.
  • Faela Starchant - His senior colleague in the Sanctum chant programme. He finds her confidence inspiring and her aurora mystery frightening in a way he cannot yet articulate.
  • Ithara Sanctumhold - The High Keeper accepted him despite his late entry and unconventional path. He would do anything she asked without qualification, which Ithara has been careful not to exploit.

Personality

  • Traits: Sincerely devout in the specific register of someone who became devout through experience rather than upbringing, anxious to be useful, occasionally awkward in his eagerness to serve a tradition he came to late
  • Mannerisms: Arrives to every appointment slightly too early; apologizes before saying things he has not yet determined are worth apologizing for; always takes the seat with the clearest view of the eastern horizon at every Dawn Echo meditation
  • Voice: Clear and melodic, still developing its lower register. When leading the Dawn Echo he visibly relaxes — the only context in which the anxiety completely disappears.

Backstory

Phoros came to the Sanctum at age forty, unusually late for a temple initiation, having spent his earlier years as an assistant to Baroth Sunforge in the engineering compound. The conversion came during a Solar Convergence when a calibration error redirected a Solar-Obelisk beam through the Sanctum's central chamber during peak prayer — an event that should have been catastrophic but instead produced a harmonic resonance that Phoros, standing in the doorway, experienced as a voice. He cannot accurately reproduce or describe what it said. He can reproduce its harmonic frequency exactly, which he does in the Dawn Echo every morning.

Daily Life

Phoros prepares the Dawn Echo meditation space before any other Sphinx arrives, arranging the crystal resonators to the precise calibration from his doorway experience. He leads the six-minute harmonic warm-up before Faela Starchant takes the main chant. Afternoons he studies astronomical charts and liturgical texts he did not receive in formal training. He writes extensive personal notes in a shorthand he invented because he runs out of parchment.

Secret

The voice Phoros heard during the Solar Convergence gave him one instruction that he has been following without fully understanding: position the crystal resonators at the Dawn Echo in a specific configuration each morning. He has been told this configuration will matter on one particular morning. He does not know which morning or what it will do.

Story Hooks

  • 1 The morning after the party arrives, Phoros performs the Dawn Echo and the crystal resonator configuration does something unprecedented — activating what appears to be a dormant connection between the Sanctum and the Obsidian Library's sealed Living Archive section.
  • 2 Phoros has been told to give a specific phrase to the first non-Sphinx visitor to the Sanctum who asks for the Dawn Echo meditation. The party arrives. He delivers it. He does not know what it means.

Narrative Value

Phoros is a mystery delivery mechanism wrapped in a sympathetic character — naive enough to be deceived, sincere enough to be trusted. His crystal configuration and the unnamed morning create a player-triggered plot event that ties the Sanctum to the Obsidian Library's deepest secrets.
