Appearance

Physical: Small by any standard — young enough that her full growth is still ahead — with a lion body of brilliant white-gold that has not yet taken on the weathering of centuries. Her wings are proportionally large and carry a faint prismatic shimmer at the feather edges, visible only when she is in motion, which is frequently.

Clothing: A junior observer's formal sash in deep blue, which she wears precisely as regulation requires; she has added nothing to it and removed nothing from it, which her mentor finds oddly notable given that every other young Sphinx adds something personal within the first decade.

Distinguishing Marks: Her third eye opened fully at age twelve rather than the usual several decades, and it has been operating at adult-level aura sensitivity ever since; she has learned to control her reactions to what it shows her, but the learning curve was visible and left her with an unusual quality of stillness when encountering new people.

Relationships

  • Orvix Stormwatcher - The senior scholar who recognized her Astro-Glyphics gift earliest and advocated for her Council observer status; she trusts his academic judgment entirely and his self-knowledge not at all, which she considers a reasonable calibration
  • Aeloria Sunbreak - Sundera voted for the Council observation admission request by not objecting when Orvix proposed it; Sundera has spent sixty years studying what the High Riddle-Keeper's non-objection actually means in context, and has four competing theories
  • Quelindra Nightshroud - The only other Sphinx she has encountered who takes notes at equivalent density and granularity; they work in adjacent archive alcoves and have never discussed their respective projects, which Sundera finds the most interesting research relationship she has

Personality

Backstory

Sundera hatched from a Wyrm-Egg whose century of incubation coincided precisely with the Solar Convergence — a coincidence that prompted three Sphinxes to attempt to claim her as a prophetic figure before she had learned to speak. She has spent her three centuries politely refusing this framing while becoming, without apparent effort, one of the most gifted Astro-Glyphics students the Peaks have produced in four hundred years. She was admitted to the Council chamber as an observer at age two hundred and eighty, the first such admission in recorded history. She takes detailed notes at every session and has not yet shared those notes with anyone.

Daily Life

Sundera divides her days between formal Astro-Glyphics study under the Observatory's senior scholars and her Council observation schedule. She attends every Council session she is permitted to observe — her access is technically optional and she has never once declined. Outside these commitments she works on her own Astro-Glyphic mapping project, translating star-rune configurations into a notation system she is developing because the existing one has a structural limitation that she identified at age sixty and has been designing around since.

Secret

Her Astro-Glyphic notation project has revealed something she did not expect: the notation system she is developing can represent configurations that the current system classifies as theoretically impossible. She has tested and retested this finding for eighty years. The configurations are not impossible. They describe something that has not yet been observed — and her timeline projections suggest it will be observed within the next forty years.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Sundera requests a private meeting with the party and presents them with a star chart rendered in her new notation — incomprehensible in the old system but readable to anyone she has just spent two hours teaching — and asks whether any of them have seen this configuration before, in any context, anywhere.
  • 2 The Solar Convergence produces a stellar alignment that Sundera predicted in her private notes fourteen years ago and told no one about; three Council members ask her to explain the prediction; she explains her notation system accurately and in full; the Council immediately classifies the session record.

Narrative Value

Sundera represents the next generation of Sphinx intellectual capacity and offers a fresher, less-institutionalized perspective on the civilization's systems. Her notation project creates a tool that can serve as a story device for prophecy and pattern recognition, while her Council notes give her knowledge of internal politics she is still young enough to find surprising.
