THESSARA NIGHTWEAVE
SphinxesDream-Reader (unofficial); Independent Scholar of Aura Residue
THESSARA NIGHTWEAVE serves as Dream-Reader (unofficial); Independent Scholar of Aura Residue within Sphinxes. THESSARA NIGHTWEAVE is identified as Sphinx. Primary residence: Crystal Caverns, lower residential quarter, Sun-Scarred Peaks. Commonly described traits include Traits: Gentle in a way that does not signal weakness, extremely careful about the boundary between what she reads in a dream-residue and what she infers from it, has developed strong ethical instincts about knowledge obtained without consent, Mannerisms: Arrives at meetings noticeably before others and positions herself where she can see all exits; speaks in a very particular register about dream-content, using a passive construction that keeps herself formally outside the narrated experience; apologizes for what she knows before sharing it, and Voice: Soft without being quiet, carrying an unusual even quality that other Sphinxes describe as the absence of ambient sound — as though her voice is the only thing in whatever space she occupies.
"The dream is not the message. The feeling you carry out of it is the message. I read that."

Appearance
Physical: Slight and very quiet in movement — she has spent eight centuries practicing stillness, and it shows in the way she occupies space as though testing whether she is actually there. Her lion body is the blue-grey of moonlit stone, and she moves through the cavern system at night nearly invisible.
Clothing: Nothing formal; she wears a single practical wrap against the deep-cavern cold and has carried the same one for two hundred years, repaired in increasingly illegible patchwork.
Distinguishing Marks: Her eyes are permanently mid-cycle — fixed at the transition between two color states, which gives them an iridescent instability that other Sphinxes find difficult to hold in their gaze for long. She suspects this is a side effect of sustained aura-reading but has no controlled comparison to test against.
Relationships
- Ashael Voidgazer - The only other Sphinx she considers to be working on adjacent problems from a different angle; they have met once, formally, and Thessara read Ashael's dream-residue involuntarily and has never mentioned what she saw; Ashael's aura told her it had already happened
- Aeloria Sunbreak - Among her unofficial clients — a fact that Thessara treats as the most sensitive confidence she holds, not because Aeloria asked for discretion but because she understands what it means that Aeloria came at all
- Delvara Moonshroud - The archivist asked her professional opinion on whether prophetic documents could show aura-residue consistent with emotional state at composition; Thessara confirmed they could and that the specific document Delvara was asking about showed evidence of fear; Delvara thanked her and did not open the document

Backstory
Thessara operates outside the official Sphinx disciplines — there is no formal school for dream-reading because the Council has never agreed on whether the practice is a legitimate application of astro-glyphic resonance or an uncontrolled form of second sight that skirts the Riddle Covenant. Thessara does not particularly care about the classification. She began reading dreams when she discovered at age twenty that she could perceive the residue of another Sphinx's dream-state in their morning aura. She has spent eight hundred and seventy years refining this into something precise enough to be useful and something vague enough to be deniable. Several Council members visit her. None of them officially.
Daily Life
Thessara works primarily at night, which aligns naturally with her practice — the dream-residue she reads is freshest in the hours immediately after sleep, and the cavern's night quiet makes the reading cleaner. She takes clients by personal referral only, a chain that has never been interrupted or traced. She maintains no written records of sessions; her memory of them is total and her discretion is absolute. She spends her non-client hours doing what she calls clean observation: sitting in high-traffic areas of the citadel and reading no one, simply practicing the discipline of not reading in order to ensure it remains a choice.
Secret
The most frequent dream-residue she encounters in the Council members she reads, appearing across six different Sphinxes with individual variation in its details but identical in its core content, is a dream of the Obsidian Library's deepest vault being opened. In the dream, what comes out is not threatening. It is familiar. The dreamer is always glad to see it. This convergence has been appearing for approximately forty years, which correlates with nothing she can identify in the public record.
Story Hooks
- 1 Thessara approaches the party with a request: she has a client whose dream-residue contains imagery specific to a location the party has recently visited, and she wants to know what they saw there — not the facts, which she can obtain through other means, but the quality: whether the place felt old, intentional, or like something waiting.
- 2 A party member wakes with an unusually vivid dream and finds Thessara outside their room; she apologizes and explains she was not reading them intentionally but the residue was strong enough to reach her from three caverns away; she tells them what she saw and asks if they want to know what it means.
Narrative Value
Thessara provides a unique intelligence source — subjective emotional data from the Peaks' most powerful Sphinxes — and the convergent vault dream gives her a central mystery thread that implicates the entire Council. Her ethical care about consent-based knowledge makes her a morally complex resource rather than an easy information dispenser.
