ORENDIL STARWOKEN

The Celestials

The Avatar-Touched, Former Intermediary of Aether

ORENDIL STARWOKEN serves as The Avatar-Touched, Former Intermediary of Aether within The Celestials. ORENDIL STARWOKEN is identified as Avatar-Touched Aeriel. Primary residence: Shattered Isles. Commonly described traits include Traits: Has developed, after three centuries of carrying Aether's resonance imprint, a relationship with space that mortals cannot replicate — they experience distance as a quality rather than a quantity, feel planar boundaries the way other beings feel temperature, and find enclosed rooms instinctively uncomfortable not from claustrophobia but from the difficulty of fully experiencing space-as-quality when the dimensions are small, Mannerisms: Chooses their physical position in any group with care, not from social calculation but from spatial resonance — they will explain, if asked, that they are standing 'where the room's geometry is clearest,' a statement that others accept or do not based on their resonance sensitivity, and Voice: Carries an Aetheric resonance that makes it perceptible from slightly farther away than its actual volume should allow, as if the sound is taking a shorter path through space than it should.

Avatar-Touched Aeriel Age: 412 Non-binary

"Aether taught me to feel space as a quality for a hundred and twelve years. What you are standing in is not empty. What you are moving through is not nothing. I would like you to experience that for a moment."

Appearance

Physical: Orendil is an Aeriel of four hundred and twelve years carrying a permanent imprint of Aether's presence in ways that are visible and not suppressible. Their body occasionally becomes partially transparent — not fading but revealing, briefly, a violet-white inner light before returning to opacity — and the geometric shapes of Aether's Infinity Loop sigil appear spontaneously on their skin during periods of intense spatial awareness. These appearances last between seconds and hours and are reported by Orendil as a sensation of remembering something very large.

Movement: Orendil moves through space with unusual spatial confidence — they are precisely aware of distance, angle, and position in ways that ordinary proprioception does not account for — and have a tendency to stand in the exact geometric centre of any space they occupy, which they do not consciously arrange but which observers consistently note.

Distinguishing Marks: The air around Orendil is perceptibly different from the air at a distance of a metre — slightly clearer, slightly more still — in a way that sensitive beings describe as a small pocket of Aether's domain extending from their body.

Relationships

  • Aether - The Celestial whose co-inhabitation left a permanent imprint in Orendil's spatial perception; the relationship did not end cleanly when the co-habitation concluded — there are moments when Orendil experiences spatial awareness so acute that they cannot determine whether it is residual Aether-resonance or Aether observing through them again, which they have decided to treat as an interesting epistemic condition rather than a distressing one
  • Velanthos the Unmoored - The two beings in the Shattered Isles who have the most operationally detailed understanding of its spatial anomalies; they work in practical collaboration without having reached a shared metaphysical framework for their respective presences, which both find appropriate
  • Shattered Isles Communities - Orendil's three-hundred-year presence in the Isles has made them a figure that communities relate to differently depending on their history with spatial anomalies — some consult them as a spatial healer, others avoid them due to the unsettling clarity of their spatial presence, and a few have built cultural traditions around the Infinity Loop appearances on their skin

Personality

  • Traits: Has developed, after three centuries of carrying Aether's resonance imprint, a relationship with space that mortals cannot replicate — they experience distance as a quality rather than a quantity, feel planar boundaries the way other beings feel temperature, and find enclosed rooms instinctively uncomfortable not from claustrophobia but from the difficulty of fully experiencing space-as-quality when the dimensions are small
  • Mannerisms: Chooses their physical position in any group with care, not from social calculation but from spatial resonance — they will explain, if asked, that they are standing 'where the room's geometry is clearest,' a statement that others accept or do not based on their resonance sensitivity
  • Voice: Carries an Aetheric resonance that makes it perceptible from slightly farther away than its actual volume should allow, as if the sound is taking a shorter path through space than it should

Backstory

Orendil was selected by Aether as an avatar-intermediary in the aftermath of the last confirmed Celestial avatar manifestation, assigned to the Shattered Isles where reality was thinning in ways that required spatial recalibration. For one hundred and twelve years, Orendil served as Aether's direct channel in the Isles — not fully possessed but partially co-inhabited, their spatial awareness merged with Aether's dimensional perception to accomplish planar calibration that neither could have achieved alone. The co-habitation ended when the calibration was complete; Aether withdrew, leaving Orendil with the permanent imprint of a century of spatial co-presence. The Celestial Order classified this as an extraordinary service outcome and offered Orendil a permanent position at the Temple. Orendil declined and returned to the Shattered Isles, where they have remained.

Daily Life

Orendil inhabits the Shattered Isles in a way that the Isles' communities find both essential and slightly unnerving — they are the local authority on spatial anomalies, planar thinning, and rift-adjacent phenomena, serving as the practical spatial adviser that neither the Order nor Velanthos fully provides. They spend their time moving between the Isles' communities, assessing spatial conditions, and occasionally performing minor planar calibrations using the remnant of Aether's imprint that still inhabits their spatial perception. They maintain no permanent home but are always findable by anyone who knows to stand in the geometric centre of the nearest significant open space and wait.

Secret

The hundred and twelve years of avatar-co-habitation gave Orendil access to Aether's spatial perception of the Shattered Isles, and what Aether perceived there was not what the Order's official account of the Schism describes. The Isles were not torn from the world by conflict energy. They were moved — deliberately, precisely, to a specific location in the world's spatial geometry — by Aether, during the Schism, for a purpose Orendil perceived in full but that Aether has never confirmed or discussed since the co-habitation ended. Orendil knows where the Isles were moved from, and what was at that location before they occupied it.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Orendil appears at the Temple of the First Dawn for the first time in three hundred years and requests an audience with the Circle of Five's Aether-domain representative, carrying a map of the Shattered Isles' original location drawn in a notation system that the representative recognises as early Stellascript from the Age of Harmony
  • 2 The Infinity Loop sigils on Orendil's skin appear and do not fade for eleven days — the longest appearance on record — during which Orendil is unreachable in the Shattered Isles' central open space, standing still, and the island nearest the Shattered Isles' geometric centre begins, slowly, to move

Narrative Value

Orendil holds the secret history of the Shattered Isles' geography — why they are where they are — and provides the Aether domain with a mortal figure who has genuinely experienced divine spatial perspective. They connect the Schism's spatial aftermath to its deliberate rather than accidental character, and serve as the practical spatial authority for the Isles' ongoing anomalies.
