Appearance

Physical: The oldest-looking Aeriel most Zephyrians have encountered, Orveth carries his century and a half with a deliberate slowness that conceals both the sharpness of his mind and the considerable strength remaining in his forge-hardened frame. His sky-blue skin has deepened with age to a blue-grey that matches storm cloud, and the lightning-burns across both forearms are extensive enough that his skin there has taken on a permanent texture of hammered metal. His wings, once full-feathered, have lost most of the primaries to age and forge-heat, leaving a framework of bare quill-shafts interspersed with the remaining feathers — a silhouette that makes him instantly recognizable in Tempest Rift airspace.

Clothing: Thick forge-leather apron over minimal Aeriel flight-wear, fitted with attachment points for Storm-Orbs and a tool belt carrying instruments no other Smith can identify. On formal occasions he dons the Storm-Smith Guild's charred-silver mantle, which bears five decades' worth of etch-marks recording his major works.

Distinguishing Marks: His left hand has only four fingers — the middle was lost to a Storm-Core implosion forty years ago. He uses the gap in his grip as a precision measurement tool for fine work, calling it his most useful injury.

Relationships

  • Sylindra Weavecrown - His most important current patron, who commissioned the Korr-method blade with a discretion that tells him she expects trouble. He has made two, keeping the second — he considers it insurance, though he has not defined against what.
  • Dravael Aerowright - His current apprentice, whose engineering aptitude he considers superior to his own at the same age and whose impatience he considers the primary obstacle to the young Aeriel reaching full potential. He sets increasingly difficult problems rather than providing encouragement.
  • Kaelvar Stormspike - The Storm-Rider Captain who brings him recovered Tempest Drake scale and bone from deep-Rift missions, materials no one else in the Confederacy will handle. Orveth uses them in the Korr reconstructions and pays in Forge-grade Aero-Lances — a transaction both parties find satisfactory and neither has reported.

Backstory

Orveth Galecleft served forty years as a journeyman Storm-Smith under the previous Guild Master before producing the work that changed both their careers: a Storm-Glass alloy that could hold a sustainable lightning charge for thirty-six hours, tripling the useful life of Aero-Lattice platform connectors. The Guild Master took credit; Orveth documented the technique in a sealed submission to the Sky-Archives and waited. The deception came to light at a Wind-Summit when a visiting Talamhari engineer asked a question only Orveth could answer. He has been Guild Master for sixty-one years, and the previous one's name is not spoken in his forge. In his later decades he became obsessed with the original methods of Storm-Smith Korr, whose Storm-Crystal Blade techniques were only partially preserved, and has spent thirty years reconstructing them from archaeological fragments, Aeriscript fragments in the Sky-Archives, and systematic experimentation.

Daily Life

Orveth arrives at the Cloud-Forge before sunrise, when the Tempest Rift's morning currents produce the specific charge-differential his most delicate work requires. He takes on one apprentice per decade — currently Dravael Aerowright — and spends two hours each morning in direct instruction before the day's commission work begins. He reviews every piece that leaves the Forge personally, rejecting approximately a third on quality grounds. Evenings he works alone on the Korr reconstruction, which his apprentices are not permitted to observe.

Secret

Orveth has successfully reconstructed Korr's complete Storm-Crystal Blade method, including the element Korr's published record omitted: the blade must be quenched not in water but in the blood of a living Storm-Serpent, which channels a specific bio-electrical signature into the crystal matrix. He has not replicated this final step because he believed Storm-Serpents extinct — until Kaelvar mentioned, in passing, that the Tempest Rift's deepest channel smelled like active nest. He has not asked directly, and Kaelvar has not offered.

Story Hooks

  • 1 Orveth contacts outsiders with an offer: he will forge a commission of their choice using the rarest Storm-Crystal alloys if they will accompany him into the Tempest Rift's deep channel to retrieve a specific material he will not name in advance.
  • 2 The Cloud-Forge has begun producing spontaneous discharge events — uncontrolled lightning releases that have injured two apprentices. Orveth knows the cause but refuses to say, only insisting that someone must reach the Rift's floor level and close something he describes as a door left open by people who didn't understand what they were opening.

Narrative Value

Orveth is the keeper of lost craft knowledge and the bridge between current Zephyrian capability and the legendary techniques of their founding era. His Korr reconstruction quest ties him to Kaelvar's Storm-Serpent secret, creating a convergence point where multiple NPC agendas intersect — and where outsiders who assist him gain access to weapons of exceptional power.
