External Interaction & Guardian Role
6.1 Contact with the Outside World
While the Islanders are open to trade and cultural exchange, they remain cautious about preserving their traditions, culture, and natural resources. They carefully choose their international engagements, ensuring that these interactions align with their values and interests. The Islanders of Shimmering Isles are somewhat isolated but engage in trade with other coastal regions. They are sought after for their expertise in sea magic and navigation. Foreign visitors are welcomed but must observe the Guest Tide Protocol: upon arrival, they present a gift of something from their homeland (no matter how small) to the Harbor Voice, symbolizing the mixing of waters. In return, they receive a strand of Moonkelp to wear during their stay, marking them as honored guests under the protection of Islander hospitality.
6.2 Contribution to Regional Stability
The Islanders play a crucial role in connecting different regions of Landorya, not just through trade but also through cultural and knowledge exchange. Their efforts significantly contribute to the stability and prosperity of Landorya, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation among regions. As the primary sea traders of Landorya, they serve as the connective tissue binding the continent's coastal civilizations.
6.3 Guardian Role
The Islanders see themselves as stewards of the ocean, maintaining the health of marine ecosystems and ensuring the safety of sea routes. Their alliance with sea creatures and mastery of water magic makes them natural guardians of the maritime world. The Great Leviathan, believed to house the spirits of their ancestors, symbolizes their protective duty toward the seas. This guardianship extends beyond their own waters; Islander rescue vessels patrol the major shipping lanes, and any ship in distress
regardless of its origin or flag
can expect aid from the nearest Islander port. This tradition, called the "Duty of the Wave," is considered sacred and non-negotiable, even in times of political tension.
6.4 Current Political Stance
The Islanders focus on maritime security, sustainable trade, and cultural preservation. They prioritize securing their maritime routes and territories, advocate for and practice sustainable trade, and maintain a strong focus on preserving their unique cultural heritage and traditions in the face of increasing global interactions. Under President Tidewalker's leadership, the current Council has pursued a policy of "Open Harbors, Guarded Depths"
welcoming increased trade and cultural exchange at the surface level while strengthening protections around sacred underwater sites and sensitive ecosystems.
