Fauna, Companions & Familiars

15.1 Companion Creatures

CreatureDescription
DolphinsIntelligent and friendly, dolphins are common companions for fishermen and revered in local mythology. The Guardian Dolphins, a mystical pod led by Kalani, are believed to sense when Islanders are in danger and guide lost sailors home.
Giant TurtlesAncient creatures often seen basking on secluded beaches or gliding gracefully in shallow waters. Symbols of longevity and wisdom. The eldest known Giant Turtle, called "Old Shellback" by the fishermen of Pearlhaven, is estimated to be over three hundred years old and bears Islander prayers carved into its shell from generations past.
Mythical Sea SerpentsTales of benevolent sea serpents are part of the Islanders' lore. Seraphina, whose scales glimmer in moonlight, emerges during full moons to ensure calm seas and bring fertility to the waters.
The Great LeviathanA colossal sea creature believed to be the guardian of the Shimmering Isles. Legends say it saved the islands from a great tsunami by absorbing the wave's force. Islanders believe the spirits of their ancestors reside within it.
Domesticated AnimalsSmall, resilient animals adapted to island life, including a unique breed of small dogs and trained seabirds. The Isledog, a compact, water-loving breed with webbed paws and a water-resistant coat, is the most common household companion.
Coral Reef InhabitantsColorful fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and other marine species that inhabit the vibrant coral reefs surrounding the Isles. Central to the Islanders' diet and culture.
Luminescent AlgaeBioluminescent organisms that cause certain beaches to glow with ethereal light at night. A source of wonder and inspiration.

15.2 Notable Wildlife

  • Reef Foxes: Semi-aquatic foxes native to the mid-ring islands, hunting in tidal pools.
  • Stonecrabs of Velashra: Coral-encrusted crustaceans whose shells serve as living camouflage.
  • Skydarters: Iridescent diving seabirds trained as message carriers.
  • Tidesinger Frogs: Amphibians whose croaking synchronizes with tidal rhythms.
  • Sandwhales: Large burrowing lizards of the Whispering Sands, occasionally domesticated.
  • Moonjellies: Translucent jellyfish that pulse with pale blue light and are harmless to Islanders (whose natural skin oils repel their stings). Their movements indicate current patterns.
  • Storm Petrels of Grauwacht: Hardy seabirds native to the northern isle that can fly in hurricane-force winds. Seeing one is considered a warning of approaching storms.

15.3 Magical and Mythical Beasts

Beyond the commonly seen creatures, Islander waters are said to harbor rarer beings:

  • The Tidewraiths: Ghostly luminescent fish that appear only during the Dead Calm, believed to be the souls of drowned sailors awaiting the Leviathan's guidance.
  • Coral Golems: Living constructs of coral animated by powerful Coral Shapers for the defense of sacred underwater sites. They stand sentinel at the entrances to the Moonpool of Velashra and the Abyss Gate.
  • The Singing Rays: Large manta rays that produce musical tones through specialized organs in their wing-tips. Dolphin Speakers report that the rays compose complex melodies that carry for leagues underwater.
