The Obsidian Crown

Also known as: The Crown of Five Clans, Korathyn's Crown, The Glass Crown

The Obsidian Crown is the supreme symbol of Drakonian unity and the most sacred political artifact in Drakon, forged by Korathyn Blackfire himself from volcanic glass cooled directly by Tiraveth's breath during the resolution of the Dragon Schism. It is a broad circlet of perfectly formed obsidian inlaid with five gemstones representing the five elemental dragon clans: a ruby for fire, sapphire for water, emerald for earth, white diamond for air, and a void-crystal that absorbs rather than reflects light for shadow. The Crown is worn only by the Lord of the Flame at investiture ceremonies and the most significant occasions of state.

History

The Obsidian Crown has been worn by every Lord of the Flame since Korathyn Blackfire, though its physical travel history is carefully managed due to its fragility as a glass artifact. Three instances of minor damage — hairline cracks repaired by shadow clan craftsmen using Voidsteel micro-inlay — are recorded in the Serpentine Archives. During the Third Eruption War, when the Obsidian Citadel was threatened, the Crown was transported to Drakescale Hold under Dragon Guard escort, making it the only time in recorded history it has left the Citadel.

Powers & Abilities

  • Grants the wearer heightened clarity in matters of inter-clan judgment, historically described by Lords of the Flame as a sudden ability to perceive all five clan perspectives simultaneously
  • In proximity to the Eternal Flame, the five inlaid gems resonate with a harmonic tone that carries across the Obsidian Citadel and is said to compel honesty in those who hear it during proceedings
  • Provides a degree of protection against dragon-fear, the involuntary psychological response most non-Drakonians experience in the presence of large dragons
  • Symbolically: its recognition by all five elemental clans as legitimate regalia makes the wearer's authority unchallengeable by any single clan acting in isolation

Curse or Drawback

Those who place the Crown upon their head without having earned the Lord of the Flame position through the required ritual combat process report an immediate and overwhelming sensation of bearing a weight far beyond the physical mass of the object, described by the few who have survived the experience as feeling the accumulated grief and burden of every Lord of the Flame who wore it before them. Two such unauthorized wearers required months of recovery.
