Thermal Crystals are rune-charged glacial crystals that radiate a steady, sustained heat through a fusion of Frostborn Runecraft and the natural mineral properties of deep-glacier stone. They are the primary heating and cooking source across all Frostborn settlements, enabling habitation in carved ice chambers that would otherwise be uninhabitable without constant fire. Each crystal is inscribed with a specific combination of heat-emission and duration runes that determine its output intensity and its charge cycle before it requires renewal by a rune-scribe. Their glow in darkness ranges from deep amber to pale gold depending on charge level, and they are warm to the touch at all times — a striking contrast to every other surface in the Frostbound Wastes.

Their creation and maintenance is one of the most economically significant applications of Runecraft in the wastes, and the rune-scribes who specialize in their inscription and recharging are assured comfortable lives regardless of which clan they serve. Trade relationships with outside races sometimes involve offering Thermal Crystal technology — though the Frostborn have been careful to share only the use of the crystals rather than the Runecraft inscriptions needed to create them.
