Geography

The Frostbound Wastes stretch across the far northern reaches of Landorya, dominated by sweeping snowfields, glacial plains, and frost-bitten terrain that resists cultivation. The land is shaped by centuries of ice and wind, leaving a stark, dramatic landscape of frozen tundra and jagged ice formations.

Climate

Perpetually cold and punishing, the region endures biting winds and long, lightless winters that test the limits of any living creature. Brief thaws, when they occur, are considered precious and fleeting by the Frostborn who call this place home.

History

The Frostbound Wastes have been the ancestral homeland of THE FROSTBORN since time immemorial, shaping their culture, physiology, and magic. As guardians of Landorya's northern borders, the Frostborn have long stood as the first line of defense against whatever dangers press from the far north, making the Wastes not merely a home but a strategic bulwark for the entire continent.

Legend & Lore

It is said that when the Frostbound Wastes were young, the first of THE FROSTBORN did not settle the land, they were born of it, exhaled as living breath from the great glacier known as the Worldspine, which has since sunk beneath the ice and vanished from all maps. Elders whisper that the Worldspine did not die, but merely descended deeper, and that on the coldest nights its slow, grinding heartbeat can still be felt trembling through the frozen ground. Some claim that should the Wastes ever fall to an enemy, the Worldspine will rise again, cracking the permafrost open like a wound, and unleash a cold so absolute it would shatter iron and silence even the wind. Those who have ventured too far north and returned speak of hearing a low, resonant groan beneath their feet, a sound no storm nor glacier shift has ever satisfactorily explained.

Life & Culture

Life in the Frostbound Wastes is governed entirely by survival and the rhythms of ice, hunters range the Howling Plains in small, disciplined bands, reading wind patterns and frost-sign to track the great beasts that sustain the Frostborn through the sunless months. Weavers, forgers, and bone-crafters work ceaselessly in the sheltered quarters of Frosthold, turning hide, ore, and relic bone into the tools, garments, and weapons that keep the cold at bay. Ritual is inseparable from labour: every forge-fire is lit with a spoken ward, every cut of hide is blessed before the needle enters it, and no hunter departs camp without marking their brow with a thumb-smear of glacial ash to honour the ice that both sustains and threatens them. When the aurora blazes overhead, all work ceases, the Frostborn gather in open air, faces turned skyward, believing the lights to be the spirits of ancestors patrolling the border between the mortal north and whatever lies beyond it.
