Geography

Kaldheim sits on a shelf of bedrock protruding above the Deep Ice — the only reason it can be maintained, as pure glacier surface at this latitude is unstable. The outpost consists of a central tower of ice-bonded stone surrounded by lower storage and barracks structures, all deeply buried in insulating snow-pack on their outer faces.

Climate

The most extreme sustained cold of any Frostborn settlement, with temperatures that can kill an unprepared traveler within minutes during the worst storms. The Deep Ice beyond Kaldheim's northern wall produces its own weather patterns — irregular, sudden, and often violently cold even by northern standards.

Points of Interest

  • 📍 The Watch Tower, from whose peak Stormwatch sentinels maintain continuous surveillance of the Deep Ice
  • 📍 The Northern Wall, the outpost's outermost defensive barrier, beyond which no Frostborn settlement exists
  • 📍 The Memorial Ice, a growing wall of inscribed tablets honoring Stormwatch warriors who died at their posts here
  • 📍 The Emergency Beacon, a Thermal Crystal array large enough to signal Frosthold in dire circumstances
  • 📍 The Black Door, a sealed entrance in the outpost's northern face that has never been opened in living memory

History

Kaldheim was established by the Stormwatch Clan following the Age of Fracture, when the chaos of that period allowed creatures from the Deep Ice to reach further south than previously recorded. The Council of Chiefs authorized a permanent northern garrison as part of the post-Fracture reconstruction, and Kaldheim has been continuously manned since that decision. The strange sounds and lights occasionally reported beyond Kaldheim's walls have been documented in formal reports to the Council for centuries, though no consensus on their source has ever been reached.

Legend & Lore

Stormwatch veterans who have served at Kaldheim describe what they call the Deep Quiet — a sudden cessation of all wind and sound that falls over the outpost on certain nights, followed by a sense of being observed from the darkness beyond the northern wall. Not all who experience this describe it as threatening; some describe it as being regarded by something vast and ancient and not necessarily hostile — something that has watched the Frostbound Wastes since before the first Frostborn walked its ice. Elder Astrid Longmemory considers the Deep Quiet reports among the most significant unresolved mysteries in Frostborn oral tradition.

Life & Culture

Kaldheim is staffed by rotating Stormwatch warrior-garrison shifts that typically last three months before relief parties arrive from the south. The psychological challenge of Kaldheim is as significant as the physical one — the isolation, the darkness, and the constant vigilance against threats that may or may not materialize take a toll that the Stormwatch Clan addresses through strict communal routines, ritual observance, and the tradition of Kaldheim storytelling, where off-duty garrison members share the complete oral history of the Frostborn during the Long Dark to maintain their connection to the rest of their people.
