Geography

The Wastes lie at the outermost edges of the Iron-Vein Range and beyond, where the protective mountain terrain gives way to barren, resource-starved flatlands and poisoned scrublands. No Sector-Keeper claims it, no forge burns within it, and no Stone Court holds jurisdiction over it.

Climate

The Wastes are exposed to the full fury of continental weather with no mountain shelter, bitterly cold in winter, parched and windswept in summer, and prone to violent storms year-round. The absence of geothermal warmth makes survival without clan support extraordinarily difficult.

History

The Wastes have served as the Orcish civilization's ultimate judicial sanction since the earliest codification of the Code of the Iron Heart, exile here is the prescribed punishment for oath-breakers, whose broken Blood-Oaths are considered a spiritual as well as legal crime. The boundary between the Wastes and Human frontier territories has been a source of tension, as exiled Orcs sometimes survive by raiding or integrating into Human settlements, creating diplomatic complications for the Envoys of the Iron Tongue. Some Orc elders believe the Wastes were once fertile land, and that their restoration is a long-term obligation under the Code's principle that strength must give back to the land.

Legend & Lore

It is whispered among elder Orcs that the Wastes were not always barren, that in an age before the first Blood-Oath was ever broken, the land beyond the Iron-Vein Range was lush and thundering with life, cursed to wither only when the first great oath-breaker was cast out and his tainted blood soaked the soil. Some say that on moonless nights, the shapes of that lost world flicker at the edges of sight: green hills, running water, the ghost of what was forfeit. The most chilling rumor holds that the Wastes are not empty at all, that the exile dead have formed something in the deep flatlands, a hollow reflection of a clan without name or law. Orc children are told that if they speak an oath they do not intend to keep, the wind from the Wastes will carry their words away, and the land will remember the debt.

Life & Culture

For those condemned to the Wastes, survival is a daily war waged without the scaffolding of clan, forge, or ancestor rite, no Stone Court arbitrates disputes, no forge-fire marks the turning of seasons, and no tattooist records deeds upon the skin. The exiled scavenge the poisoned scrublands for roots and brackish water, fashion crude weapons from shattered rock, and sleep in shallow depressions cut from the hardpan, exposed to the bitter winds rolling off the Iron-Vein Range. Some exiles band into loose, desperate confederacies bound not by Blood-Oath, which they are no longer considered fit to swear, but by raw necessity, their hierarchies decided by violence alone. At the western fringes, where the Wastes bleed into Human frontier territories, a grim and illicit economy takes shape: exiled Orcs trade labor, looted goods, or blades-for-hire with Human settlements, a slow integration that the Envoys of the Iron Tongue regard as an open wound upon Orcish diplomatic standing.
