Thermal-Crystal Furnaces
Also known as: Crystal Forge, Geo-Furnace, Earth-Hearth
Thermal-Crystal Furnaces are the masterwork industrial achievement of Talamhari engineering, a class of forge installation that marries raw geothermal heat channelled from volcanic vent shafts beneath the Granite Spine with a crystal matrix array that amplifies, regulates, and directs that heat with a precision impossible to achieve through conventional fuel combustion alone. Unlike surface forges reliant on charcoal or wood, a Thermal-Crystal Furnace draws its primary energy from the living heat of the earth itself, running continuously without fuel replenishment as long as the geothermal vents remain active. The crystal matrices, composed of specially grown aetherite-seeded quartz formations, absorb raw thermal energy and re-emit it at controlled frequencies matched to the optimal working temperatures of specific metals and alloys, allowing smiths to achieve metallurgical results that would require decades of trial-and-error refinement by surface craftspeople.

- Thermal-Crystal Furnaces were developed across several generations of Ministry of Forge & Craft engineers during the mid-confederation period of Talamhari civilization, building on earlier experiments with crystal-lined forge chambers that produced inconsistent results. The breakthrough came when a Rune-Weaver working in parallel with the forge engineers recognised that the inconsistency was harmonic rather than structural: the crystals were absorbing thermal energy at variable rates because they were not seeded with aetherite before growth. Introducing aetherite seeds locked the crystal's resonance profile to a stable frequency, making the thermal absorption predictable and controllable. From that point the furnace design was standardised and distributed across all Talamhari city-states within two decades.
Overview
Thermal-Crystal Furnaces is a rare magitech device in Landorya. Its known origin is Thermal-Crystal Furnaces were developed across several generations of Ministry of Forge & Craft engineers during the mid-confederation period of Talamhari civilization, building on earlier experiments with crystal-lined forge chambers that produced inconsistent results. From that point the furnace design was standardised and distributed across all Talamhari city-states within two decades.. Its most cited abilities include Maintains precise, tuneable forge temperatures across a range from bronze-work heat to the extreme temperatures required for aetherite-steel alloying, controlled by adjusting crystal-resonance panels, Self-sustaining thermal draw from active geothermal vents eliminates fuel dependency, allowing uninterrupted operation across indefinite forge-cycles, and Crystal matrix acts as a passive quality-filter, detecting impurities in metal stock through anomalous resonance signatures and alerting the smith before the pour.
History
Thermal-Crystal Furnaces underpinned the Talamhari's dominance of high-quality metalwork throughout the confederation period and were directly responsible for the runic weapons and geothermal glass that became the civilisation's primary trade exports. During the Draconic Siege of the Eastern Veins, Talamhari smiths operating behind defended furnace halls continued producing weapon and armour stock even as tunnel sections changed hands, with the furnaces' self-sustaining heat eliminating the logistical vulnerability that had crippled surface-forge civilisations in comparable sieges. After the fall of the Talamhari confederation the furnace technology was inherited by the Dwarven Holds, whose smiths adapted the crystal-matrix arrays to smaller individual forge-units deployable throughout the Iron Mountains. The grand multi-chamber Thermal-Crystal Furnace complexes of Heartforge are now ruins, but working examples of the adapted Dwarven format operate in every major Dwarven Hold today.
Powers & Abilities
- ✦ Maintains precise, tuneable forge temperatures across a range from bronze-work heat to the extreme temperatures required for aetherite-steel alloying, controlled by adjusting crystal-resonance panels
- ✦ Self-sustaining thermal draw from active geothermal vents eliminates fuel dependency, allowing uninterrupted operation across indefinite forge-cycles
- ✦ Crystal matrix acts as a passive quality-filter, detecting impurities in metal stock through anomalous resonance signatures and alerting the smith before the pour
- ✦ The crystalline emission field reduces oxidation at the metal surface during working, producing a cleaner, more homogeneous grain structure than open-air forging achieves
- ✦ Excess thermal energy above the working threshold is shunted to the city's geothermal grid, contributing heat to residential warrens and subsidiary workshops
