Appearance
Aether-Moths are small nocturnal insects whose wingspan rarely exceeds three inches but whose visual impact belies their size. Their wings carry a bioluminescent charge drawn from ambient magical energy in their environment, producing a cold, shifting glow in blues and silvers that intensifies near strong magical fields and dims almost to invisibility in magically inert air. At rest they resemble ordinary pale moths; in flight near Caelum's Skyanchor Pylons, where the aeromantic field is strongest, they swarm in clouds of dozens to hundreds, their collective glow visible from across an island and producing a light that Aeriel artists have compared to a living star-chart laid flat against the dark air.
Temperament
Aether-Moths are non-sentient insects following instinctual responses to magical-field gradients. They do not react to individual Aeriels except by proximity to the magical fields that practitioners generate during active spellcasting, which will attract small clusters of moths during prolonged outdoor practice sessions. Aeriel children regard them with uncomplicated delight. Senior aeromancers regard them with the professional appreciation of practitioners who have learned to read natural indicators.
Abilities
- • Bioluminescent wings charged by absorption of ambient magical energy
- • Swarm navigation by collective response to magical-field gradients, clustering densely at field peaks
- • Passive magical-field sensing far more sensitive than most Aeriel instruments at the individual level
- • Ability to absorb and slowly discharge small amounts of aeromantic energy, making swarms mildly disruptive to precision enchantments at close range
Lore
Aeriel children are told that the Aether-Moths were created by the Celestials as the sky's first written language, that the patterns their swarms form above the pylons on clear nights encode messages from the makers of the world if one knows how to read them. No Aeriel scholar has ever produced a credible cipher, but the game of interpreting swarm patterns has been played by every generation of Aeriel children for as long as there are records, and certain patterns — the Long Spiral, the Scattered Crown, the Double Arc — have acquired traditional interpretations that most Aeriels know regardless of whether they believe them.
Role in the World
Aether-Moths serve an informal but valued function as living magical-field indicators. The density and brightness of a swarm above a Skyanchor Pylon is used by experienced aeromancers as a rapid informal check on pylon health — a bright, dense swarm indicates strong field output; a sparse, dim gathering may prompt a formal inspection days before instruments would register degradation.
