Geography
The Observatory occupies a solo plateau island, smaller than Cloudholm or the Primary Plateau but elevated slightly above the rest of the Caelum archipelago to maximise unobstructed sky exposure. Its surface is almost entirely given over to the Observatory complex, with only a narrow residential wing for the permanent observation staff and a small docking ledge for arriving flyers. The sky-glass bridge connecting it to the Academy is enchanted against wind-stress and has survived every major sky-storm in recorded history.
Climate
The Observatory island is intentionally unshielded from natural weather conditions. Observers work the outer platforms in full wind and cold because the Aeriels believe celestial observation performed in comfort is subtly compromised — that the discomfort of the sky is itself a form of attention. Interior chambers within the domed structure are heated by Stormglass resonance but the working decks outside remain exposed by design.

History
The Celestial Observatory was established in the centuries following the Shattered Skies catastrophe, conceived by the master astromancers of early Caelum as both a practical tool for mapping the chaotic new sky and a monument to the Aeriels' sacred mandate. Its foundational dome was raised before the Astrolabe of Astraeus was complete; early generations of observers used hand-held instruments on the open platform while the great machine was constructed around them across multiple lifetimes of work. During the Duskwind Crisis, it was through readings taken at the Observatory that Star-Navigator Seraphis Dawnmantle identified the celestial root cause of the disaster.
Legend & Lore
The Observatory's oldest dome is said to have been raised not from stone and sky-glass but from solidified cloud, hardened by a single breath from a Celestial who paused momentarily above Caelum on some larger errand and was moved to leave something permanent. Scholars dismiss this account but are privately unable to explain why the oldest dome's walls, when tapped, produce a resonance distinctly unlike any known sky-glass composition.
Life & Culture
Life within the Observatory is structured around the observation schedule rather than any social clock. Scholars rotate through day and night watches, with the night watch considered the more prestigious posting; sleeping quarters are deliberately spare to discourage overlong occupation. The permanent staff of about forty includes astromancers, cartographers, and the Grand Astronomer's personal deputies. Visitors from the Celestial Academy, which lies across the sky-glass bridge, cycle through for training observations, and once each decade an outside scholar from a surface civilization arrives through the Aerial Exchange Programme for a season's work.
