Cloudholm is a wide, relatively flat island compared to the spired heights of Caelum's observatory plateaus. Its surface is divided into terraced work-levels cut into the bedrock, each tier handling a different stage of sky silk production or the processing of star-metal salvaged from meteoritic falls. Wide loading platforms ring the island's eastern and western edges, designed for sky-merchant vessels arriving to collect trade goods.

Wind conditions on Cloudholm are deliberately managed rather than endured. The Windwright Foundry's wind-capture arrays redirect and channel high-altitude jet currents across the island's face, creating sheltered corridors for foot traffic while feeding raw atmospheric energy into the Windwright Loom. The result is an island where the air is always in purposeful motion but rarely destructive, a carefully maintained balance between industrial utility and inhabitable calm.

Cloudholm was among the first islands permanently inhabited after the Shattered Skies catastrophe, chosen for its stable aeromantic field and unusually flat topography that made construction practical in the chaos of early Caelum's rebuilding. The Windwright Foundry was established centuries later, once the aeromantic knowledge required to drive a permanent industrial loom had been developed at the Celestial Academy. Since then, Cloudholm's economy has been the material foundation upon which the rest of Caelum's knowledge-trade rests.

An old Cloudholm saying holds that the first sky silk thread ever woven on the Windwright Loom is still embedded in the loom's core housing, unbroken, anchoring every bolt of silk produced in the centuries since. Foundry workers call it the Anchor Thread and credit it with the loom's uncanny resilience — the machine has never suffered a catastrophic failure, which engineers attribute to sound aeromantic engineering and which the workers prefer to attribute to the thread.

Life on Cloudholm moves to the rhythm of production cycles. Dawn shifts begin before the Lark's Call reaches the island, aeromancer teams performing pylon and loom checks while the loading platforms receive the first deliveries of raw materials from overnight surface-trade arrivals. The midday break is communal and outdoor in Caelum tradition, taken on the broad second tier with a view across the sky toward the Celestial Observatory. The evening social life of Cloudholm gravitates toward the Foundry-side taverns, where the conversation is practical, the wind-harp is tuned competitively loud to be heard over the machinery hum, and visiting merchants from surface civilizations are treated with the efficient warmth of people who value commerce without ceremony.
