Appearance
A pale, translucent arachnid roughly the size of a Dwarven fist, its eight legs tipped with fine mineral hooks that allow it to cling to smooth crystal surfaces without damaging them. Its abdomen is semi-transparent, revealing a faintly glowing organ that processes silicate material into the gossamer webs it spins among crystal formations.
Temperament
Crystal-Crawlers are solitary and territorial within their chosen crystal cluster, but entirely non-aggressive toward Dwarves unless directly handled. They move with a slow, deliberate grace, as though conscious of the delicate environment they inhabit.
Abilities
- • Spins silicate webs of exceptional tensile strength among crystal formations
- • Mineral hooks allow frictionless movement across polished crystal surfaces
- • Internal organ converts raw mineral intake into conductive silk thread
- • Venom mildly petrifies soft organic tissue on contact
- • Sensitive to magical fluctuations within Living Crystal, retreating before destabilization events
Lore
Crystal-Weavers of the Dwarven Holds maintain an almost reverent relationship with Crystal-Crawlers, considering their silk a gift rather than a resource to be taken by force. Ancient craft-texts preserved in the Hall of Echoes describe a technique called 'the Patient Harvest,' in which a Weaver must spend three days beside a Crawler's web, offering warmth and stillness, before the creature will voluntarily abandon a finished web for collection. Some Drakonian scholars have expressed interest in the Crawlers' silk for their own magical applications, but the Dwarves have never permitted live specimens to leave the Holds.
Role in the World
The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains harvest Crystal-Crawler silk alongside crystal filaments, as the silicate webbing is a key material used by Crystal-Weavers in runic circuitry and inscription work. Their presence in a Crystal Garden is considered a mark of ecological health, and their webs are carefully worked around rather than destroyed during harvest operations.
