Overview

Fire-Lizard belongs to geothermal fauna in the Landorya bestiary. Its usual habitat is Fire-Lizards congregate around geothermal vent openings throughout the Deep Zone of the Dwarven Holds, with their densest populations found near the Ember Wells beneath Kragnir.. The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains regard Fire-Lizards as living barometers of the vent systems: their sudden mass exodus from a vent cluster is one of the earliest and most reliab… Key abilities include Full immunity to extreme geothermal heat and scalding steam, Scales shift color as a passive indicator of nearby vent pressure changes, and Feeds on thermophilic insects, keeping vent corridors clear of pest buildup.

Appearance

A small, slender reptile no longer than a Dwarven forearm, covered in iridescent scales that shimmer between deep copper, molten orange, and vivid crimson depending on the heat of its surroundings. Its lidless eyes glow faintly amber, and the tip of its tail emits a low, steady warmth perceptible to the touch.

Temperament

Fire-Lizards are skittish around unfamiliar presences but grow remarkably calm and curious around Geothermal Engineers who frequent the vents. They are non-aggressive and scatter quickly at loud sounds or sudden pressure shifts.

Abilities

  • Full immunity to extreme geothermal heat and scalding steam
  • Scales shift color as a passive indicator of nearby vent pressure changes
  • Feeds on thermophilic insects, keeping vent corridors clear of pest buildup
  • Can survive brief contact with molten rock surfaces
  • Detects seismic vibrations through heat-sensitive organs along its spine

Lore

Dwarven engineers have a saying: 'When the lizards leave, so do you.' There are at least three recorded instances in the annals of Kragnir where a mass retreat of Fire-Lizards preceded catastrophic vent eruptions, and the holds were evacuated in time because engineers heeded the warning. Some Rune-Scholars of the Runic Order of the Deep believe the creatures are touched by Gara-Stone's will, serving as the mountain's own alarm system. Outsiders who have visited the Holds sometimes attempt to smuggle Fire-Lizards to the surface, where they invariably perish within days, a fate the Dwarves consider a fitting punishment for the theft.

Role in the World

The Dwarves of the Iron Mountains regard Fire-Lizards as living barometers of the vent systems: their sudden mass exodus from a vent cluster is one of the earliest and most reliable warnings of a dangerous pressure eruption. Geothermal Engineers at Kragnir's Ember Wells actively monitor Fire-Lizard behavior as part of their safety protocols.
