Appearance
Tidal Dolphins are larger than the common ocean dolphins known to surface-world sailors — adults measure between four and five meters in length, with a hydrodynamic profile more heavily muscled through the shoulders and flanks than their smaller relatives. Their coloration is a deep ocean blue on the dorsal surface, shading to silver-white at the belly, with a distinctive iridescent stripe running from snout to dorsal fin that bioluminesces faintly in the deep ocean, pulsing in patterns that Nereid scholars have determined correspond to emotional states and intentional communication. Their eyes are large, intelligent, and capable of the same low-light adaptation as Nereid eyes, suggesting a long shared evolutionary history in the deep reef zones where both peoples have lived since the earliest recorded song-cycles.
Temperament
Tidal Dolphins are consistently described across centuries of Nereid scholarship as possessing personality as individual and complex as any Nereid citizen. They demonstrate long-term memory, preferential bonds with specific Nereids, clear aesthetic preferences evident in their play behaviors, and what appears to be a genuine social and moral sensibility — Tidal Dolphins have been observed intervening in conflicts between other marine creatures on behalf of the weaker party with no obvious survival benefit to themselves. They cannot be compelled; all bonds are formed voluntarily and may be dissolved at the Dolphin's discretion. Current Riders whose mounts have chosen to end a partnership universally describe it as one of the most significant experiences of their lives.
Abilities
- • Echolocation of extraordinary precision, capable of resolving individual Nereids by the unique resonance signature of their Tidal Resonator organ
- • Tidal Surge Swimming — the ability to generate localized current pulses from their flukes, used both for rapid acceleration and as a non-lethal disorientation technique in defensive situations
- • Bioluminescent stripe communication, producing complex patterns readable by trained Nereids and by other Tidal Dolphins across considerable distances
- • Breath capacity sufficient for dives reaching the upper abyssal zones, allowing them to operate alongside Coral Guard units at patrol depths
- • Exceptional tactical intelligence, including the ability to understand and execute complex multi-stage coordination signals transmitted by Current Rider partners
Lore
The Tidal Dolphins appear in the earliest layers of the Nereid song-cycles as companions, witnesses to the Celestial creation events, and as the first creatures the first Nereids communicated with in something approaching genuine mutual language. The myth of the First Bond — in which a founding Nereid and a Tidal Dolphin developed a shared harmonic vocabulary that became the basis for the Tidal Song language itself — is a foundational creation story in the Temple of Flowing Peace's ceremonial calendar. Whether or not this myth is historically accurate, what is observable is that Tidal Dolphins respond to Tidal Song with far greater comprehension than any other marine species, and that their echolocation frequencies overlap significantly with the Nereid Tidal Resonator's sensitive range — a biological coincidence that Nereid scholars find unlikely to be accidental.
Role in the World
Tidal Dolphins serve as voluntary partners to the Coral Guard's Current Rider units, functioning as mounts, scouts, and tactical assets in Nereid defensive operations. A subset known as Trained Tide-Mounts have been raised in deliberate partnership with Coral Guard riders across multiple generations, developing a bond of mutual comprehension that allows complex coordinated combat maneuvers. Outside the military context, Tidal Dolphins are ecological partners in the monitoring of reef health, frequently communicating disturbances to Nereid settlements before any other warning system detects them.
