Geography

Nereidum encompasses a network of underwater coral cities built in the Ocearan architectural tradition, tiered coral-citadel complexes with vaulted pressure arches and bioluminescent-lit promenades. Its territories likely occupy portions of the original Cerulean Deep and Abyssal Corridor, with coral plateaus and kelp-forest valleys providing both structure and sustenance.

Climate

Like the Ocearan heartland it inherits, Nereidum's underwater cities experience cool, high-pressure conditions in their deeper wards and warmer, current-swept environments near thermal vent zones. Bioluminescent flora maintained through Tide-Restoration Rituals illuminate its passages in perpetual soft radiance.

History

Nereidum emerged as the direct cultural and political successor to Oceara (Water) following the ancient civilization's transformation across the ages. The Nereids preserved and continued Ocearan hydro-law, including the restrictions on Tidal Disruption and Abyssal Summoning that mirror Ocearan statutes, and maintained the role of Guardians of the Deep Currents. Their relationship with the Islanders of the Shimmering Isles represents a division of the Ocearan legacy: Nereidum holds the deep-sea traditions while the Islanders carry forward surface maritime engineering and trade.

Legend & Lore

It is whispered among the Nereids that the first coral citadel of Nereidum did not grow from the seabed but was sung into being, that the founding matriarchs of the Deep Chorus intoned a harmonic chord lasting nine tidal cycles, and where their voices converged, the reef calcified overnight into vaulted halls and pressure arches perfect enough to have stood ten thousand years. At the heart of the eldest citadel, a chamber sealed by layered resonance-locks is said to contain the Last Breath of Oceara: a sphere of compressed ancient water, untouched by current or tide, within which the final decree of the old civilization still echoes. Some Nereid archivists believe that opening the chamber would not release wisdom but catastrophe, that the decree is a prohibition, and the sphere its living lock. Others say the sphere pulses faintly in synchrony with the Abyssal Corridor's deepest currents, as though Oceara itself is still breathing.

Life & Culture

Daily existence in Nereidum moves to the rhythm of the tides above and the slow pulse of bioluminescent coral below, with each citadel district attuned to a specific current that governs the timing of work, rest, and ritual. Artisans carve living reef into architectural forms, pressure arches, resonance galleries, tidal-lens windows, using a discipline indistinguishable from deep magic, and apprentices begin shaping coral by hand long before they are taught to shape it by voice. Every seventh tidal cycle, the Nereids observe the Deepward Vigil: all harmonic work ceases, the bioluminescent promenades are darkened, and citizens descend to the lowest kelp-forest valleys to listen in silence for any tremor in the Abyssal Corridor that might signal disturbance to the currents they are sworn to guard. Hydro-law governs all civic disputes, trade with the Islanders of the Shimmering Isles, and the rationing of abyssal access, enforced not by a warrior class but by a council of Tide-Readers whose authority derives entirely from their demonstrated mastery of harmonic magic.
