Geography

The Riverways extend from the bioluminescent trench-floors of the Cerulean Deep outward along tectonic fault corridors, branching upward through volcanic rock to reach Pyrakian harbors and horizontally through the deep earth to merge with Talamhari tunnel networks. Where they breach the sea surface, open-water junctions called Surface Nodes connect to Zephyrian Wind-Portals, creating the only known continuous trade route linking all four elemental civilizations of ancient Landorya.

Climate

Within the enclosed current-corridors, conditions remain cool and high-pressure regardless of the surrounding geology. Near thermal vent junctions the water warms dramatically and bioluminescent organisms cluster around the rune-marked walls, providing the only natural light in the deepest stretches. The corridors are subject to pressure surges when tectonic activity disturbs the vent fields, which Ocearan engineers called Tide-Hammers and designed emergency pressure baffles to absorb.

Points of Interest

  • 📍 The Pelagius Hub — the primary junction beneath the capital where all major Riverway branches converge
  • 📍 The Talamhari Deep-Lock — a pressure equalization chamber where Riverways transition from ocean-floor conduits into Talamhari-built stone tunnels
  • 📍 The Surface Nodes — open-water transfer points at which passengers board Zephyrian Wind-Portals
  • 📍 The Tide-Glyph Pillars — resonant nacre monoliths spaced at intervals throughout the corridors, transmitting navigational pulses
  • 📍 The Pyrakian Harbor Vents — geothermal entry points where Riverways surface within volcanic sea-harbors shared with the Pyrakians

History

The Ocearan Riverways were constructed over three centuries of sustained effort by the Ministry of Deep-Works, beginning in the middle period of the Ocearan Confederation when inter-civilizational trade demanded faster and more reliable routes than surface sea-lanes could provide. The early corridors connected only the deep-sea citadels to one another; later extensions pierced the continental shelf to reach Talamhari territory, and the Surface Node junctions were added during the grand weather-balancing league forged with the Zephyrians. At their peak the Riverways carried Pearl Tokens, pressure-crystals, Talamhari earth-forged metals, and Pyrakian volcanic alloys in quantities that underpinned the economies of four civilizations simultaneously. After the Ocearan Confederation's decline, maintenance of the corridors fell to the Nereids of Nereidum, who preserved the deepest sections, and the Islanders of the Shimmering Isles, who maintain the Surface Nodes as part of their maritime trade network.

Legend & Lore

Ocearan lore holds that the very first Riverway was not built but dreamed — that High Hydromancer Thalassa the Undying walked in trance along the ocean floor for forty days and forty nights, and where her feet pressed the silt a current was born in her wake, carving the first corridor by sheer force of attuned will. Engineers in later centuries always disputed this account, yet every survey of the Pelagius Hub has found the central trunk-corridor to be perfectly straight, with walls smoother than any coral-rune tool could produce, and no record of its original construction survives in the Ministry of Deep-Works archives.

Life & Culture

For Ocearan traders and envoys the Riverways were as mundane as a market road, traveled weekly aboard Current-Caravans, cylindrical nacre-hulled vessels sealed against pressure and propelled by embedded Tide-Pulse Generators. Passengers loaded cargo, locked their hatches, and were swept along at speeds that compressed multi-week ocean surface journeys into a matter of days. Riverway maintenance crews, called Tide-Walkers, performed routine patrols on foot in pressure-armored suits, inspecting rune-pillars and clearing kelp growth from the current-baffles. The Transit Charter, a subcode of the Cerulean Codex, governed passage rights, toll arrangements, and collision protocols within the corridors, and Tide Tribunal arbiters maintained permanent offices at the Pelagius Hub to adjudicate disputes between Ocearan and non-Ocearan users.
