Appearance

Stone-Vines appear at first glance to be ordinary grey climbing plants etched into cliff faces, their bark indistinguishable from the surrounding rock. Only when they move, slowly coiling tendrils probing the air like blind fingers, does their predatory nature reveal itself, the faint green luminescence of their inner sap glowing at the joints.

Temperament

Stone-Vines possess no true awareness, operating on slow, patient predatory instinct, they respond to vibration and magical resonance, reaching toward warmth and arcane energy with mindless, relentless intent.

Abilities

  • Lithic Camouflage, surface texture and colour perfectly mimic surrounding stone when motionless
  • Constricting Tendril, slow but immensely powerful grasping limbs capable of crushing rock
  • Sap Drain, extracts mineral nutrients and latent magical energy from whatever it ensnares
  • Cliff Anchoring, root systems penetrate dozens of feet into sheer rock faces, making removal nearly impossible

Lore

Sphinx architects have, over centuries, learned to cultivate Stone-Vines deliberately around the outer walls of the Sun-Scarred Sanctum, training their growth with mineral offerings to create living, shifting barriers that no simple map can capture. Unwary climbers from outside civilizations have been found cocooned in Stone-Vine tendrils on the lower cliffs, preserved but drained of magical ability, a fate the Sphinxes call 'the cliff's answer to a foolish question.' Young Sphinxes studying at the Obsidian Library are taught to identify Stone-Vine by its faint mineral scent and the near-imperceptible hum it emits near ley-line cracks. Curiously, Solar Moths never land on Stone-Vines, and Sphinx scholars consider their avoidance a reliable warning sign.

Role in the World

On the cliffs of the Sun-Scarred Peaks, Stone-Vines serve an ambivalent role for the Sphinxes - The Riddle-Masters of the Sun-Scarred Peaks, natural hazards that deter unworthy climbers, but also structural reinforcers of the peaks' sky-bridges and carved sanctum walls.
