Overview

Appearance

The Stone-Mole is a stocky, badger-sized burrower covered in overlapping scales of hardened grey skin, rough as pumice, with two broad forepaws tipped in chisel-like claws of near-mineral hardness. Its tiny, milky eyes are functionally blind to light, but two fan-like sensory organs flanking its snout twitch constantly, reading vibrations and mineral concentrations in the surrounding rock.

Temperament

Docile and affectionate with their handlers, Stone-Moles are nonetheless single-minded when they catch the scent of a rich ore vein, they will pull, dig, and squeal until investigated. They are deeply uncomfortable in open air and grow skittish and irritable above ground.

Abilities

  • Detects ore veins and mineral deposits through vibrational sensitivity
  • Claws can chip through soft stone for short bursts
  • Senses toxic gas pockets in tunnels before they become lethal
  • Bonds strongly to a single handler, following scent through labyrinthine mines

Lore

A miner whose Stone-Mole suddenly went still and pressed its snout flat to the ground was trained to evacuate immediately, the creature's stillness was the oldest known warning sign of imminent tunnel collapse, and Talamhari safety doctrine was built around it. The Dwarven Holds of the Iron Peaks still breed Stone-Moles in dedicated warrens beneath their holds, and gifting a trained pup to a newly promoted mine-captain remains a honored ceremony. Traders from outside the mountain civilization have occasionally attempted to purchase Stone-Moles, but the creatures pine, refuse to eat, and invariably die within months when kept far from stone, leading the Talamhari to declare them 'children of the rock, not property of the surface.'

Role in the World

Stone-Moles were indispensable companions to Talamhari miners and prospectors, serving as living ore-finders that reduced the risk of exploratory tunneling; every mining team of the Talamhari was expected to keep at least one, a tradition inherited by the Dwarven Holds.
