Appearance
Time-Turtles are ancient reptiles of considerable size, their carapaces composed of layered temporal strata rather than conventional bone: under close examination each growth ring in the shell corresponds not to a year of biological aging but to a distinct era of Landoryan history, encoding geological time in organic form. Their skin is a deep, translucent grey through which the slow circulation of what appears to be liquid Starlight is dimly visible. They move in a manner that seems to occupy a slightly different moment than their surroundings, creating a faint visual blur around them as though they are being perceived from two adjacent points in time simultaneously.
Temperament
Time-Turtles display a quality that observers variously describe as patience, inscrutability, or the absence of urgency so profound it approaches a philosophical stance. They respond to human interaction with calm acknowledgment rather than either fear or eagerness, appearing to assess their environment on a timescale so extended that most interactions are simply too brief to merit a response. The oldest individuals are essentially immobile, having apparently concluded that movement across the remaining span of observable time is unnecessary.
Abilities
- • Age at an imperceptibly slow rate, with some individuals believed by Order scholars to predate the founding of the Celestial Order itself
- • Passively stabilise the temporal resonance in their immediate environment, reducing the severity of Time-Mist phenomena near Chronos-Spire
- • Store and occasionally release fragments of historical temporal resonance, producing brief, involuntary visions in sensitive observers who touch their shells
- • Resist temporal distortion effects that would disorient or harm other creatures, including exposure to the Chronos-Spire's upper temporal envelope
- • Navigate by temporal landmark rather than spatial landmark, finding their way by the resonance signature of specific historical moments anchored to physical locations
Lore
The Order's naturalists have attempted to count the growth strata of the oldest known Time-Turtle, a large individual residing in the pool directly below the Chronos Sanctum, and their analysis suggests the creature is old enough to have been present before the founding of the Order, predating Elandros' arrival at the summit. Several Oracle Keepers have proposed that the oldest Time-Turtles carry within their shells the full resonance record of Landorya's history and that a sufficiently sensitive Oracle in direct contact with one might be able to access any historical moment. The Order has not authorised this experiment. The Chronos-domain tradition assigns Time-Turtle familiars to its most senior Star-Readers, and the bond between an aged turtle and an aged Star-Reader is considered one of the most resonance-stable relationships in the Order.
Role in the World
Time-Turtles are protected under the Order's ecological law as living geological archives and passive temporal stabilisers. The pools at the base of Chronos-Spire where they congregate are maintained as protected habitat by the Chronos Sanctum staff. Order geomancers use the shell growth-strata to date surrounding rock formations more accurately than any other method, making the turtles an invaluable research asset. They are also considered sacred companions for Chronos-domain monks.
