Ecosystem & Environment
The Whispering Sands are a landscape of extraordinary diversity and hidden depth, spanning approximately 1.2 million square kilometres of Landorya's interior. Far from the featureless waste outsiders imagine, the desert harbours Oasis Nodes — natural water wells fed by deep aquifers — and the Ruined Terraces of a pre-desert civilization whose identity the Scholars have spent centuries attempting to reconstruct.
Temperature swings of sixty degrees Celsius between noon and midnight create a demanding environment that the Scholars have adapted to with considerable ingenuity. The Solar-Sand Cell system — thousands of photovoltaic crystal nodes embedded in the dunes — harvests intense desert sunlight and converts it into Thermal-Arcane energy, channelled underground through conduits of compacted sand-glass to power Cooling Chambers, observatories, and the anti-decay wards that protect the Great Library's ancient scrolls.
Windstorms of extraordinary violence periodically sweep the sands, burying entire excavation sites overnight and requiring the Solar-Weaver corps to fan out for days of recalibration work. The Scholars regard these storms not merely as hazards but as events of ecological significance: each storm redistributes sand-mana across the desert floor, rebalancing the magical substrate on which Sand-Weave practice depends. The Balance Codex's Arcane Quotas limiting sand-mana extraction per lunar cycle were designed in explicit recognition of this ecological reality. Over-extraction, the Scholars have learned at painful historical cost, disrupts storm patterns and destabilises the aquifer networks that sustain the oasis-khanates themselves.
