Geography & Settlements
At the heart of the Scholar network sits the capital, Sahar-Al-Mutaqaddim, home to the High Scribe-Council and the Great Library — a complex of interlocking sand-glass domes that houses over forty million scrolls, crystal tablets, and living memory records. Each of the outlying oasis-khanates, called Madrassa-Khanates in Scholar terminology, is built around either a functioning observatory or a sealed ancient ruin.
Among the desert's most significant landmarks is the Echoing Basin, a low-lying depression where wind patterns create a perpetual, haunting whisper that the Scholars interpret as the desert's own voice. No settlement is built within the Basin itself; it is considered a site of spiritual communion. To the south lies the Sunken Valley of Thal-Marek, a deep canyon whose walls are lined with ancient petroglyphs and sealed tombs. Scholars believe the Valley was once a riverbed, evidence that the Whispering Sands were not always desert.
The Crystal Dunes are a region where silica-rich sand glitters with almost painful brilliance under the desert sun — the primary harvesting ground for the raw quartz used to craft Star-Crystals. Further north, the Pillar Fields of Ashar rise in columns of wind-scoured sandstone, some exceeding forty metres in height; the Scholars have converted these natural formations into elevated observation posts and relay stations, threading them with Astral Relay mirrors that bounce starlight signals across the desert. The Oasis of Al-Farad, westernmost of the Madrassa-Khanates, serves as the primary gateway for Ambassadorial Caravan departures, and its guest-halls are among the most cosmopolitan spaces in all of Landorya.
