Seasonal Cycle

The lives of the Nomads of Aurora are governed by a seasonal calendar whose primary markers are the movements of the Auroch herds, the transitions of the Spirit Winds, and the blooming cycles of the Aurora Plains' distinctive flora. This calendar is not arbitrary but is a living document, updated through each generation's accumulated observation and adjusted when ecological conditions shift. The Ministry of Education and Storytelling maintains the canonical forms of seasonal knowledge while the Mystical Stewards interpret its spiritual dimensions and Joran Skywatcher's cartographic tradition tracks the physical geography of seasonal routes.

Spring begins when the first Aurora Blooms appear on south-facing slopes and the Auroch herds begin their northward drift. The Aurora Bloom Festival marks the turning, a three-day gathering of local tribes featuring the exchange of seed stocks, the sharing of winter's stories, and the ceremonial first riding of young horses who have been born and trained indoors through the cold months. Summer is the season of greatest travel, when the full northward migration route is followed and the caravan confederation spreads across its widest geographic range, trading with the most distant settled communities and gathering the seasonal intelligence that will shape autumn decisions.

Autumn's arrival is marked by the southward turn of the Aurochs and the Wind-Turning ceremony, in which the Mystical Stewards gather on the Wind Mesa to observe the change in Spirit Wind direction and formally acknowledge the seasonal shift with offerings of windgrass and dried Aurora Bloom. The Migration Feast that follows is the largest communal gathering of the year, a celebration of the summer's travels and the abundance gathered. Winter is the season of consolidation and inner life, when the caravans reduce in size and the confederation disperses into sheltered valleys like the Moonshadow Valley. It is the season of intensive storytelling and of the Sky Falcon Release, in which trained falcons carry the last messages of the year between far-flung camps before settling into winter quarters of their own.
